Faces - A Nod Is As Good As A Wink...To A Blind Horse... (1971) [2005, Audio Fidelity Remastered]

The Faces’ third album, A Nod Is as Good as a Wink…to a Blind Horse, finally gave the group their long-awaited hit single in “Stay with Me,” helping send the album into the Billboard Top Ten, which is certainly a testament to both the song and the album, but it’s hard to separate its success from that of Rod Stewart’s sudden solo stardom. In the mere months that separated Long Player and A Nod, Rod had a phenomenal hit with “Maggie May” and Every Picture Tells a Story, his third solo album Continue reading “Faces – A Nod Is As Good As A Wink…To A Blind Horse… (1971) [2005, Audio Fidelity Remastered]”

Damn the Torpedoes wasn’t simply a culmination of Tom Petty’s art; it happened to be a huge success, enabling him to call the shots on its successor, Hard Promises. Infamously, he used his first album as a star to challenge the record industry’s practice of charging more for A-list artists, demanding that Hard Promises should be listed for less than most records by an artist of his stature Continue reading “Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers – Hard Promises (1981) [1992, MFSL Remastered]”

Ricky Nelson – The American Dream: The Complete Imperial and Verve Recordings 1957-1963 (2001) [6CDs, Box Set]

Ricky Nelson - The American Dream: The Complete Imperial and Verve Recordings 1957-1963 (2001) [6CDs, Box Set]

This boxed set was 25 years in the making! Ever since Bear Family Records started, we’ve wanted to do the complete Ricky Nelson recordings on Verve and Imperial. Few artists had the consistency …and few were as influential. But we didn’t want to do an incomplete job so we waited until we had access to all the original masters and session tapes so that we could do it absolutely right. Tears For Fears – The Tipping Point (2022) [Deluxe Edition]

Tears For Fears - The Tipping Point (2022) [Deluxe Edition]

Seventeen years is a long time between albums. It’s even longer when you consider the magnitude of how much life happens during that interval. Tears for Fears had experienced mega pop successes (and loads of industry pressure) with Songs from the Big Chair and The Seeds of Love. Curt Smith, sick of paying fame’s price, quit in 1991. The Pretty Things – Bouquets From A Cloudy Sky: The Complete Pretty Things (2015) [13CDs + 2DVDs, Box Set]

The Pretty Things - Bouquets From A Cloudy Sky: The Complete Pretty Things (2015) [13CDs + 2DVDs, Box Set]

It is a hefty box in every sense: 13 CDs, supplemented with two DVDs, accompanied by a gorgeous hardcover book and a variety of tchotchkes, including a poster that traces the twisted family trees and time lines of the band and, just as helpfully, replicas of legal documents that explain why the group didn’t retain rights to its recordings for years. Cilla Black – Completely Cilla: 1963-1973 (2012) [Box Set, 5CD + DVD]

Cilla Black - Completely Cilla: 1963-1973 (2012) [Box Set, 5CD + DVD]

Cilla Black wasn’t a natural singer when the Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, discovered her, and while she learned the ropes well enough and developed into a strong ballad singer, she was never a serious threat to Dusty Springfield in the talent department. But the pop world isn’t really about pure talent as much as it is a matter of timing, luck, having the right look, and maybe most of all, good material and good production Continue reading “Cilla Black – Completely Cilla: 1963-1973 (2012) [Box Set, 5CD + DVD]”

Apple – An Apple A Day… (1969) [2020 Remastered]

Apple - An Apple A Day... (1969) [2020 Remastered]

Apple were a British psychedelic rock band. The band was founded in Cardiff in 1968 by Rob Ingram on guitar and Jeff Harrad on bass. They released a single LP in 1969, titled An Apple a Day. The album was a commercial failure, and the band ceased to exist shortly after its release. However, during the subsequent years several tracks from the LP, most notably “The Otherside” by Harrad, were dubbed classics of British psychedelic rock by critics, making An Apple a Day one of the most sought-after British psychedelic rarities. Madeleine Peyroux – Let’s Walk (2024) [Japanese Edition]

Madeleine Peyroux - Let's Walk (2024) [Japanese Edition]

Let’s Walk is the ninth album by Madeleine Peyroux. On her previous outings, she recorded covers of jazz and Great American Songbook standards and works of contemporary songwriters. While she’s often co-written songs with her collaborators, Let’s Walk is entirely composed of her written originals, which offer excellent lyrics as she continues to mine jazz, blues, and folk.
