One would be hard-pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground & Nico. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album’s sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set. By augmenting their sound with more synthesizers, electronics, and drum machines, the Cars’ fourth release, Shake It Up, helped bridge their hard rock-based early work (1978’s The Cars) with the futuristic-pop direction of 1984’s Heartbeat City Continue reading “The Cars – Shake It Up (1981) [2009, MFSL Remastered]”

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run (1975) [1994, Sony MasterSound, 24-Karat Gold Disc Remastered]

Bruce Springsteen’s make-or-break third album represented a sonic leap from his first two, which had been made for modest sums at a suburban studio; Born to Run was cut on a superstar budget, mostly at the Record Plant in New York. Springsteen’s backup band had changed, with his two virtuoso players, keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Vini Lopez, replaced by the professional but less flashy Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg Continue reading “Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run (1975) [1994, Sony MasterSound, 24-Karat Gold Disc Remastered]”

VA - Oh! You Pretty Things: Glam Queens And Street Urchins 1970-76 (2021) [3CD-Set]

Three CD set. In the teenage wastelands of grey early Seventies Britain, where the musical landscape was dominated by introspective singer-songwriters and dour rock bands, the emergence of the outrageous, androgynous, peacock-plumaged Glam Rock scene provided a vital spark in the dark. Sadly the genre was quickly hijacked by the backroom hustlers of the British music industry and their mutton-dressed-as-glam pop idol marionettes. Continue reading “VA – Oh! The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown – The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown (1968) [2010, Deluxe Edition, Remastered, 2CD]

Though a bit over the top, this album was still powerful and surprisingly melodic, and managed to be quite bluesy and soulful even as the band overhauled chestnuts by James Brown and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. “Spontaneous Apple Creation” is a willfully histrionic, atonal song that gives Captain Beefheart a run for his money. George Benson – Songs And Stories (2009) [CD + DVD + Hi-Res]

George Benson - Songs And Stories (2009) [CD + DVD + Hi-Res]

George Benson’s sound is so recognizable that, in its way, it’s quite comforting to hear his voice or his guitar come across on the radio or in a club. His recordings have been polished and extravagant in many cases, but there are those signature elements — his relaxed delivery and silky touch on the strings and his voice, as evocative as a cool breeze floating across a hot summer night. Songs and Stories doesn’t deviate from his formula a great deal, but it doesn’t have to. Continue reading “George Benson – Songs And Stories (2009) [CD + DVD + Hi-Res]”

Throughout 1969 and into 1970, CCR toured incessantly and recorded nearly as much. Appropriately, Cosmo’s Factory’s first single was the working band’s anthem “Travelin’ Band,” a funny, piledriving rocker with a blaring horn section — the first indication their sonic palette was broadening. The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds (1966) [2009, Audio Fidelity Remastered]

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (1966) [2009, Audio Fidelity Remastered]

The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. The Strokes – Is This It (2001) [2002, US Version + DVD]

The Strokes - Is This It (2001) [2002, US Version + DVD]

Blessed and cursed with an enormous amount of advance hype from the British press, the Strokes proved they were one of the few groups deserving of glowing reviews with Is This It. Granted, their faultless influences — especially the Stooges, Lou Reed, and the Velvet Underground — have “critics’ darlings” written all over them. However, the Strokes don’t rehash the sounds that inspire them; they remake them in their own image. Continue reading “The Strokes – Is This It (2001) [2002, US Version + DVD]”

3 (Emerson, Palmer, Berry) - Live in Boston 1988 (2015) [2CD]

The British/American progressive rock band 3 was a spin off from Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, releasing just one album in 1988 called To the Power of Three produced by Palmer. This release was recorded on the successful tour they undertook to promote the then-new album. During the tour, the band mixed material from the new record with classics from ELP and The Nice.
