Fly Like an Eagle is the ninth studio album by American rock group Steve Miller Band. The album was released in May 1976 (see 1976 in music) by Capitol Records in the United States, Canada and Japan and Mercury Records in Europe. The album was a success, spawning three singles: the title track, “Take the Money and Run” and “Rock’n Me”, and eventually receiving quadruple platinum certification from the RIAA. Fired by Columbia Records in 1973, Clive Davis took over tiny Bell Records in 1974 and turned it into Arista, determined to re-establish his record-selling credentials. One beneficiary of this was Melissa Manchester, who had made two good, but poor-selling albums for Bell. Davis turned on the money tap, and the result was this L.A.-recorded Vini Poncia/Richard Perry production that seemed determined to turn Manchester into a pop diva. Totally Hot is one of the most fun albums from Olivia Newton John. Total abandon is its trademark, the atmosphere lightened up a bit, and from top to bottom it is one of her most satisfying projects. “Please Don’t Keep Me Waiting” is a girl group all grown up. Is it Newton-John’s voice or Michael Botticker’s synthesizer at the end of the first track? A little jarring for her country audience, but she takes care of them on “Dancin’ ‘Round and ‘Round,” a wonderful country-pop tune and quick about face. As with the Let Me Be There release, her name is prominently splashed on the cover and the tan background suits her well, with the mysterious look with the kerchief on the inside cover as playful as the music. Picture This found Huey Lewis and the News developing a signature sound, but they truly came into their own on their third album, Sports. It’s true that the record holds together better than its predecessors because it has a clear, professional production, but the real key is the songs. Where their previous albums were cluttered with generic filler, nearly every song on Sports has a huge hook. And even if the News aren’t bothered by breaking new ground, there’s no denying that the craftmanship on Sports is pretty infectious. We Must Believe in Magic is the fourth studio album by American country music singer Crystal Gayle. Released on June 24, 1977, it became her highest selling album, reaching #2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and #12 on the main Billboard album chart (her first album to enter the main chart and her only album to make the Top 30 there to date). It was certified platinum by the RIAA in 1978. The album also has the distinction of being the first platinum album recorded by a female artist in country music. It was also Gayle’s first album to chart in the UK, where it reached #15, and was certified silver by the BPI. In the Netherlands, it stayed on the charts for two weeks and peaked at #29. Boston is the debut studio album by American rock band Boston. Produced by Tom Scholz and John Boylan, the album was released on August 25, 1976, in the United States by Epic Records. Scholz had studied classical piano in his childhood and became involved in the Boston music scene in the late 1960s. He subsequently started to concentrate on demos recorded in his apartment basement with singer Brad Delp, and although their previous group, Mother’s Milk, had received numerous rejection letters from major record labels in the early 1970s, by 1975, the demo tape had fallen into the hands of CBS-owned Epic Records, who signed them. A Night at the Opera is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Queen, released on 21 November 1975 by EMI Records in the United Kingdom and by Elektra Records in the United States. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker and Queen, it was reportedly the most expensive album ever recorded at the time of its release. The album’s title is taken from the Marx Brothers film of the same name. In every sense, A Day at the Races is an unapologetic sequel to A Night at the Opera, the 1975 breakthrough that established Queen as rock & roll royalty. The band never attempts to hide that the record is a sequel — the two albums boast the same variation on the same cover art, the titles are both taken from old Marx Brothers films and serve as counterpoints to each other. But even though the two albums look the same, they don’t quite sound the same, A Day at the Races is a bit tighter than its predecessor, yet tighter doesn’t necessarily mean better for a band as extravagant as Queen. If Disraeli Gears was the album where Cream came into their own, its successor, Wheels of Fire, finds the trio in full fight, capturing every side of their multi-faceted personality, even hinting at the internal pressures that soon would tear the band asunder. A dense, unwieldy double album split into an LP of new studio material and an LP of live material, it’s sprawling and scattered, at once awesome in its achievement and maddening in how it falls just short of greatness. This was the last time this popular Australian band released an album that matched the earlier Sleeper Catcher and Diamantina Cocktail. With a mix of harmony-drenched pop tunes and unthreatening rockers, they appealed to a wide audience. This album features some of their most poignant lyrics. You can empathize with Glenn Shorrock when he earnestly sings about the albatross and the whales being his brothers in “Cool Change,” this release’s standout track. If you haven’t heard “Lonesome Loser,” you just weren’t listening to AM radio in 1979.
