There’s something exciting about the first album of a band that goes on to greatness, and The Pentangle, by the group of the same name, is no different. Here, the listener witnesses the first studio work of a band struggling to get their essence down on vinyl. Of course Bert Jansch and John Renbourn’s reputations as guitarists preceded the band, but the addition of bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox gave the band an acoustic rhythm section like no other folk-rock group. John Barry’s sensitive score to the 1982 biopic Frances harkens back to the Hollywood golden era that launched the film’s subject, doomed actress Frances Farmer (played onscreen by Jessica Lange). Its simple yet sumptuous melodies evoke the classic melodramas of decades past, albeit informed with an emotional depth rarely achieved in the infancy of the sound era. John Barry’s fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It’s also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early- to mid-’60s. This 1973 release features what is essentially a Bay Area bar band led by Merl Saunders (keyboards) and Jerry Garcia (guitar) during the latter musician’s downtime from the Grateful Dead. Along with the two subsequent “encore” volumes, Live at Keystone includes performances drawn from the quartet’s July 10-11, 1973, run in the intimate confines of Keystone Korners in Berkeley. The Age of Plastic is the debut album by the English new wave duo the Buggles, released on 10 January 1980 on Island Records. It is a concept album about the possible repercussions of modern technology. The title was conceived from the group’s intention of being a “plastic group” and the album was produced in the wake of the success of their debut record, “Video Killed the Radio Star” (1979), which topped the UK Singles Chart. Most of the album’s other tracks were written during promotion of the single. Continue reading “The Buggles – The Age Of Plastic (1980) [2014, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
