Willie Dixon once told Wild Child Butler, “You are the moan of the suffering woman, the groan of the dying man. You ain’t nothing but the blues.” Here’s a man who’s been heavily praised by Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Jimmy Rogers just to name a few; a man who those blues legends were proud to accompany. As traditional as the blues on this album are, there’s no mistaking a Wild Child tune. Continue reading “Wild Child Butler – Sho’ ‘Nuff (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

This set had me worried. Some of the group improvising is so sparse and meandering that it almost sounds as if the musicians are lost, or too shy to play much. However, just when one is ready to give up on this project as a lost effort, one of the musicians gets the momentum flowing and the others follow with their own comments. Monty Alexander has always been a fine jazz pianist, but in recent years he has received more popular acclaim for interpreting the reggae music of his native Jamaica. While his reggae efforts are well done, straight-ahead jazz and interpreting standards are really his forte. Monty Alexander follows up his tribute to Tony Bennett with an homage to another classic jazz singer, Nat King Cole. Also recorded in New York City at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the same trio of Chicagoans Lorin Cohen on bass and drummer George Fludas, the veteran pianist seems more in his element with this artist’s repertoire that sharply defined his personal sound and thinking about populist jazz. Despite being the premiere of heavy metal, Jeff Beck’s Truth has never quite carried its reputation the way the early albums by Led Zeppelin did, or even Cream’s two most popular LPs, mostly as a result of the erratic nature of the guitarist’s subsequent work. Time has muted some of its daring, radical nature, elements of which were appropriated by practically every metal band (and most arena rock bands) that followed. Continuing with the same group lineup as on Rough & Ready, Jeff Beck Group was slagged off by critics for Steve Cropper’s admittedly lazy production. However, several of the songs hold up masterfully, including the skronky “Ice Cream Cakes,” the superlative redo of Don Nix’s “Going Down,” and the beautifully sad and wistful instrumental, “Definitely Maybe.” Continue reading “Jeff Beck Group – Jeff Beck Group (1972) [2015, Audio Fidelity Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Jay McShann was 83 at the time of this CD, but the pianist-singer sounds very much in prime form and had certainly not lost his enthusiasm.
