This is a true classic. Altoist Art Pepper is joined by an 11-piece band playing Marty Paich arrangements of a dozen jazz standards from the bop and cool jazz era. Trumpeter Jack Sheldon has a few solos, but the focus is very much on the altoist who is in peak form for this period. Art Pepper – Surf Ride (1956) [2012, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Art Pepper - Surf Ride (1956) [2012, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The music on this Savoy LP is quite brilliant, but the packaging leaves something to be desired. The recording dates are all incorrect and there are only 12 performances included (around 37 minutes). There are quartet outings with either Russ Freeman or Hampton Hawes on piano and tracks from a classic session with tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose. Art Pepper – Gettin’ Together! (1960) [2012, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Art Pepper - Gettin' Together! (1960) [2012, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

As a sort of follow-up to Art Pepper’s matchup with Miles Davis’ trio in the 1957 classic Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Pepper utilizes Davis’ sidemen on this 1960 near-classic. In addition to pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, trumpeter Conte Candoli makes the group a quintet on four of the eight numbers. Dusty Springfield – Dusty In Memphis (1969) [2013, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis (1969) [2013, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Sometimes memories distort or inflate the quality of recordings deemed legendary, but in the case of Dusty in Memphis, the years have only strengthened its reputation. The idea of taking England’s reigning female soul queen to the home of the music she had mastered was an inspired one. Stan Getz / Charlie Byrd – Jazz Samba (1962) [2013, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Partly because of its Brazilian collaborators and partly because of “The Girl From Ipanema,” Getz/Gilberto is nearly always acknowledged as the Stan Getz bossa nova LP. But Jazz Samba is just as crucial and groundbreaking; after all, it came first, and in fact was the first full-fledged bossa nova album ever recorded by American jazz musicians. Stan Getz – Spring Is Here (1992) [2003, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Stan Getz - Spring Is Here (1992) [2003, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

This LP was recorded at the same sessions that resulted in The Dolphin but wasn’t released until after Stan Getz’s death. Actually the music (which features pianist Lou Levy, bassist Monty Budwig, and drummer Victor Lewis in addition to the leader’s tenor) is the equal of the original set, with “How About You,” “Easy Living,” and “Old Devil Moon” showing off Getz’s tone and strong improvising skills at their best. Stan Getz/Cal Tjader Sextet – Stan Getz/Cal Tjader Sextet (1958) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

In the vein of many a smooth West Coast jazz outing, this 1958 disc finds original cool stylist Getz paired with vibraphonist Cal Tjader on a very enjoyable selection of jazz standards and Tjader originals. The lineup includes pianist Vince Guaraldi, guitarist Eddie Duran, bassist Scott La Faro, and drummer Billy Higgins (this was one of the earliest record dates for either La Faro or Higgins, both of whom were playing with Getz at San Francisco’s Black Hawk in between recording sessions). Gary Burton / Chick Corea – Crystal Silence (1973) [2017, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Gary Burton / Chick Corea - Crystal Silence (1973) [2017, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

For Crystal Silence, the first of several partnerships between Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton in the 1970s, the two musicians selected an interesting array of material. The compositions on this record are all modern ones, either by Steve Swallow, Mike Gibbs, or Corea himself. It is a mostly downtempo affair, which allows each player to stretch out and play highly melodic solos over the often difficult changes. Chick Corea – Return To Forever (1972) [2917, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Chick Corea - Return To Forever (1972) [2917, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The legendary first lineup of Chick Corea’s fusion band Return to Forever debuted on this classic album (titled after the group but credited to Corea), featuring Joe Farrell on soprano sax and flute, the Brazilian team of vocalist Flora Purim and drummer/percussionist Airto Moreira, and electric bass whiz Stanley Clarke. Chick Corea – Rendezvous In New York (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Chick Corea - Rendezvous In New York (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

One of Chick Corea’s most ambitious projects was the recording of almost 60 hours of music with nine different groups over a three-week run at the Blue Note in December 2001; it must have been a challenge to choose the dozen performances for this two-CD set. Stan Getz & Bill Evans – Stan Getz & Bill Evans (1973) [2011, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Stan Getz & Bill Evans - Stan Getz & Bill Evans (1973) [2011, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The only studio meeting between Stan Getz and Bill Evans took place over two days in 1964, with the aggressive drummer Elvin Jones and either Richard Davis or Ron Carter on bass. It is peculiar that Verve shelved the results for over a decade before issuing any of the music, though it may have been felt that Getz and Evans hadn’t had enough time to achieve the desired chemistry, though there are memorable moments. Cannonball Adderley With Bill Evans – Know What I Mean? (1961) [2002, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Cannonball Adderley With Bill Evans - Know What I Mean? (1961) [2002, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

What’s better than a Bill Evans Trio album? How about a Bill Evans trio album on which the bassist is Percy Heath, the drummer is Connie Kay, and the leader is not Evans but alto sax god Cannonball Adderley, making the group actually a quartet? It’s a different sort of ensemble, to be sure, and the musical results are marvelous. Continue reading “Cannonball Adderley With Bill Evans – Know What I Mean?
