George Wallington Quintet – Jazz For The Carriage Trade (1956) [2014, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

George Wallington Quintet - Jazz For The Carriage Trade (1956) [2014, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

During 1956-57 trumpeter Donald Byrd and altoist Phil Woods (both important up-and-coming players) were regular members of pianist George Wallington’s quintet. For this CD reissue, bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Art Taylor complete the group on a program that includes three standards (“Our Delight,” “Our Love Is Here to Stay” and “What’s New”), a pair of Woods originals (“Together We Wail” and “But George”) and Frank Foster’s “Foster Dulles.” Continue reading “George Wallington Quintet – Jazz For The Carriage Trade (1956) [2014, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

It’s something of a mystery why Mute Records waited until early 2006 to release Goldfrapp’s third album, Supernature, in the U.S. After all, when it came out in the U.K. the previous summer, it made the duo into a bona fide chart success, to the point where the album’s terrific lead single, “Ooh La La” — on which Allison Goldfrapp channels Marc Bolan’s dippy-cool vocals and lyrics over a shuffling, glam-tastic beat — drew comparisons to former S Club 7 star Rachel Stevens’ similarly glam-inspired hit “Some Girls.” Continue reading “Goldfrapp – Supernature (2005) {Hi-Res SACD Rip}”

Gotan Project - La Revancha Del Tango (2001) [2004, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

An unrivaled collection of themes representing a unique fusion amid traditional forms of music and the nouvelle fields of electronica, Gotan Project’s La Revancha del Tango discloses unknown frontiers for the modern beat explorers. Inspired by Argentinean tango, Philippe Cohen Solal and Christophe H. Müller, responsible for projects such as Boys From Brazil or Stereo Action Unlimited, united their efforts with Eduardo Makaroff to record what ultimately became a daring musical piece. Everlast - White Trash Beautiful (2004) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

White Trash Beautiful is Everlast’s third LP since he exited the House of Pain and took up the reigns of conscience-driven, streetwise roots rap. It’s been a long time coming. In music biz terms, 2000’s critically acclaimed Eat at Whitey’s was a dud next to Whitey Ford Sings the Blues’ multi-platinum success. Ray Charles + The Count Basie Orchestra - Ray Sings Basie Swings (2007) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Ray Sings, Basie Swings, huh? Hmm, well, yes and no. You see, the story goes something like this. In 2005, Concord Records exec John Burk, who produced Ray Charles’ superb late-career, Grammy-winning Genius Loves Company, found a reel of tape simply labeled “Ray/Basie.” Upon further analysis, it was determined that the 1973 recording featured Ray Charles backed by his own band — Count Basie and his band had actually recorded earlier that day. Charlotte Church – Dream A Dream (2000) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Charlotte Church - Dream A Dream (2000) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The little girl with the big voice is back for a selection of popular Christmas songs and carols, ranging from the medieval “Coventry Carol” to the brand new title track, whose chorus will be recognized by classical music fans as the “Pavan” of Gabriel Faure. In between are pop standards like “Winter Wonderland” and Mel Torme’s “Christmas Song” as well as some less familiar fare such as the delicate calypso “Mary’s Boy Child” and the Welsh “Draw Tua Bethlehem”. Rosemary Clooney - White Christmas (1996) [2003, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Although Rosemary Clooney had a major part in the famous film White Christmas back in 1954, this was her first full Christmas album and it was a big seller when it was released late in 1996. From the jazz standpoint, there is not much here, as Clooney is accompanied by a huge orchestra conducted and mostly arranged by Peter Matz.
