Talk about crossover! Kriya recorded their album in Finland, the songs are mostly translated from the original Sanskrit to Finnish, & the music generally sounds to me like a mix of Indian, Irish & Finnish. There are English translations printed of the lyrics, but this is another of those graphic failures where the background art or photography obscures the type & it is often unreadable. There do seem to be some connections between East Indian Sanskirt & Finnish, though I don’t know the details. Several of the songs have traditional Indian lyrics. Jazz purists may turn up the nose at this jazz-reggae summit meeting, but that’s their loss. It’s not that they wouldn’t have the right to be suspicious — experiments in jazz-reggae fusion do not have a distinguished history. But the combination of Jamaican-born jazz pianist Monty Alexander and reggae godfathers Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare works beautifully here for a number of reasons: first of all, Alexander is a gifted melodist with an unerring sense of groove (not always a given with jazz players), and second of all, Sly and Robbie emancipated themselves long ago from reggae’s rhythmic strictures, so there’s lots of variety on this album. Here is something unusual among the growing number of recordings of Heinrich von Biber’s Rosary Sonatas; in Arts two-disc SACD set featuring violinist Riccardo Minasi and Bizzarrie Armoniche, Biber’s set of 15 Sonatas realized with a full, Italian style continuo and Italian violin ornamentation. The accepted standard, for decades, was continuo realization with organ alone, and eventually the notion of a cello or theorbo joining the band gained acceptance. We are both privileged and delighted to release Eric’s new album “Blues, Ballads & Work Songs”, a further enhancement to Opus 3’s association with Eric which goes back to 1977 when he was in effect ‘discovered’ with the success of his debut album “Rainbow People”. Other Opus 3 albums over the years have included the 1994 release “Spirit & The Blues”, which proved to be his breakthrough album that had great success world-wide, and more recently the album “Just Like Love”. On this New Eric Bibb album the basic concept is to cover the complete range of traditional folk/blues songs which were an inherent part of his childhood up to the present time with his own inimitable compositions. The incredible Wes Montgomery of 1960 was more discernible and distinctive than the guitarist who would emerge a few years later as a pop stylist and precursor to George Benson in the ’70s. On this landmark recording, Montgomery veered away from his home Indianapolis-based organ combo with Melvin Rhyne, the California-based Montgomery Brothers band, and other studio sidemen he had been placed with briefly. Off to New York City and a date with Tommy Flanagan’s trio, Montgomery seems in his post- to hard bop element, swinging fluently with purpose, drive, and vigor not heard in an electric guitarist since bop progenitor Charlie Christian. While even label executive Orrin Keepnews admits that The Wes Montgomery Trio may have fallen short of representing Montgomery’s talent, he still felt that this debut captured a large portion of it. Recorded on October 5 and 6 in 1959, guitarist Montgomery is joined by organist Melvin Rhyne and drummer Paul Parker.
