We are both privileged and delighted to release Eric’s new album “Blues, Ballads & Work Songs”, a further enhancement to Opus 3’s association with Eric which goes back to 1977 when he was in effect ‘discovered’ with the success of his debut album “Rainbow People”. Other Opus 3 albums over the years have included the 1994 release “Spirit & The Blues”, which proved to be his breakthrough album that had great success world-wide, and more recently the album “Just Like Love”. On this New Eric Bibb album the basic concept is to cover the complete range of traditional folk/blues songs which were an inherent part of his childhood up to the present time with his own inimitable compositions. Beginning with his self-titled debut in 1970, Ry Cooder’s records seemed to be as much history lesson as they were entertainment. Not because Cooder was trying to club you over the head with this stuff; he simply gravitated to great songs, no matter what the era or genre. Released in 1978, Jazz seems to be his first conscious attempt at a concept album, in the historical sense. Here he pays homage to some of the early tunes and masters of jazz, ranging from the late 1800s through the “coon songs” of the early part of the next century, to the ragtime and “Spanish” music of Jelly Roll Morton, and the sophistication of cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. Hoodoo Man Blues is one of the truly classic blues albums of the 1960s, and one of the first to fully document, in the superior acoustics of a recording studio, the smoky ambience of a night at a West Side nightspot. Junior Wells’ penchant for clowning around sometimes conflicts with his craftsmanship, but he’s all business on Come on in This House, his most unadulterated blues record since his highly acclaimed Hoodoo Man Blues of more than 30 years vintage. This is what has come to be known as an “unplugged” session — that is, predominately, although not exclusively, acoustic instrumentation. Producer John Snyder’s concept was threefold: to team Wells with some of the era’s top younger traditional blues guitarists — Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Sonny Landreth, Bob Margolin, and John Mooney; to have those musicians, in various combinations, accompany Wells on a variety of slide guitars; and to concentrate on vintage Chicago and Delta blues from the repertoires of Rice Miller, Little Walter, Tampa Red, Arthur Crudup, and Wells himself. According to the original liner notes, this 1959 Willie Dixon session was cut during a two hour span in between flights. This certainly explains the relaxed, jam session feel of the recordings. Unfortunately, the songs come out sounding sluggish and stilted at times; this is partly due, no doubt, to the makeshift nature of the date, but also, more surprisingly, because of drummer Gus Johnson’s overly slick and formalized playing. All Blues represents a return to roots of sorts for Peter Frampton. It’s hard to overestimate the impact Stevie Ray Vaughan’s debut, Texas Flood, had upon its release in 1983. At that point, blues was no longer hip, the way it was in the ’60s. Texas Flood changed all that, climbing into the Top 40 and spending over half a year on the charts, which was practically unheard of for a blues recording.
