When asked about his favorite instrument, Johann Wilhelm Wilms could only have answered: the orchestra. This statement probably sounds rather strange for a composer who, as a young pianist, was the number one among the piano virtuosos and teachers of his adopted city of Amsterdam and who was also appreciated as a flutist for decades; however, it is at least as plausible if one listens to one of his works for orchestra: every page of a Wilms Continue reading “Paolo Giacometti, Martin Sandhoff / Kölner Akademie / Michael Alexander Willens – Johann Wilhelm Wilms: Sinfonie und Solokonzerte (2007) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

In This recording, William Kanengiser and the Alexander String Quarter pay tribute to a group of English musicians who conquered the musical world with their revolutionary explorations. From the Elizabethan lutenist John Dowland to the pop/rock icons Sting, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, these artists made a lasting impact far from the shores of their small island. Their music served as inspiration for a set of compositions for guitar and string quarter by the talented composer Ian Krouse, Dušan Bogdanović and Léo Brouwer. It is especially appropriate that the guitar sits squarely at the center of these works, as the plucked string was the primary musical voice of these British innovators. This recording of music by John Adams, by a Scots orchestra with a Canadian conductor, is illustrative of Adams’ growing international success. Harmonielehre (1985) was the work with which Adams definitely broke through minimalist restrictions and served notice that the style’s repeating chords and textures could serve as a basis for an outward view of almost anything in the musical world, that he would be absolutely impossible to pin down. Kuniko Kato, who goes by the single name Kuniko, is an emerging Japanese marimba and vibraphone virtuosa who stirred up considerable attention with her 2011 release kuniko plays reich. Cantus, which is curiously named, expands on the transcription ideas developed for the earlier release. Kuniko sets out to expand the sonic vocabulary of her percussion instruments through the use of various mallets and strike techniques. Continue reading “Kuniko – Cantus (2013) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

This should not be thought of as a crossover disc by a jazz artist trying his hand at classical music. It is a classical disc by a well-educated and highly talented musician. Although Marsalis is known as a jazz musician and educator, the original release of the first four concertos here was recorded when he was just 20 and relatively new to the jazz world as well. 2L’s two-disc set includes materials over which audiophiles could sit and argue for hours, if not longer. Each disc contains the same 19 musical selections taken from their growing, broad selection of recordings ranging from Mozart and Vivaldi to Schoenberg and Carter and beyond. The goal, presumably, is to make an argument for the superiority surround sound not just for movies, but for music as well. Disc 1 is a hybrid SACD with three separate audio tracks: DSD Stereo, DSD 5.1 channel surround, and standard 16-bit stereo. The second disc is a Blu-ray disc again presenting three audio formats: 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio, 5.1 channel 24-bit Linear PCM, and two-channel 24-bit Linear PCM. Sixty years have passed since 12 young graduates, mainly from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, got together to give voice to their passion. Thus was born a rarity of its time, a chamber group without a conductor. This apparent lack could have been their Achilles heel when the great Toscanini heard them, but their enthusiasm brought out the strong and affectionate words Continue reading “I Musici – Antonio Vivaldi: Concerti per archi e continuo (2011) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

The first time Erich Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops made a symphonic Halloween album, they called it Chiller. Now that a sequel has come from the haunted house — er, the Cincinnati Music Hall — they merely state what they hope will be the obvious, Scary Music. But this time, Kunzel doesn’t raid the classical music field for material, preferring to stick with film music, television ditties, and the Top 40.
