Like so many Willie Nelson albums of the 2010s, Ride Me Back Home bears a title that appears to be a vague nod to Nelson’s mortality. Unlike, say, God’s Problem Child or Last Man Standing, the cloud doesn’t appear to hang so heavy on Ride Me Back Home, but maybe that’s because the album is amiably unkempt in a way its immediate predecessors were not. Some of that is due to how Nelson and his longtime producer Buddy Cannon don’t rely heavily on original material this time around. The soft-spoken introvert may have spent his days upon this earth as a struggling singer/songwriter, but since leaving, his atmospheric and distinctly melancholy songs have become a pop culture fixture. Rescued from British folk oblivion by a one-off Volkswagen commercial, his name has since been bandied about by critics looking to link the English bard with every winsome, dough-faced up-and-comer who puts out a record with strings on it. With John Denver, Denver seemed to be making attempts to change his pastoral country boy image. The cover photo shows him in an intense, energy-charged performance shot, while the instrumentation is more lush and relies less on acoustic guitar than previous efforts. His own “Downhill Stuff,” and a cover of “Johnny B. Goode” are rock numbers, while Bryan Bowers’ “Berkeley Woman” is an uncharacteristically lustful song for Denver to record. Elsewhere, the haunting flute of Jim Horn on “Joseph and Joe,” and Herb Pedersen’s warm “Southwind” make the album a worthwhile buy. I Want to Live is the 12th studio album by American singer-songwriter John Denver released by RCA Records in November, 1977. Perhaps John Denver’s worst-selling album, Whose Garden Was This, is largely a record of cover songs, starting with the Tom Paxton-penned environmentalist anthem that is the title track, and including Denver versions of such songs as the Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Mr. Bojangles,” The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Golden Slumbers.” Denver’s own contributions included the awkward “I Wish I Could Have Been There (Woodstock).” Though Denver tried in a sleeve note to weave all this into a theme, something about “all the things that change as we grow older.” In fact, Whose Garden Was This was an expendable collection of second-rate Denver songs and first-rate songs done better by others. Olivia Newton John’s Come on Over is country tunes, folk ballads, and more. Her own arrangement and adaptation of the traditional “Greensleeves” is exquisite, haunting, and shows Newton-John is more than just a pretty face. Her hit catalog was already nine songs deep, and “Come on Over” was the tenth of close to 30 visits to the Top 40 in a 14-year period. Songs with Words was a project initiated by producer Joe Shepard, who encouraged Feder to use his studio. At first, she envisioned writing songs for others to sing, but since Shepard wanted to record within two weeks, Feder ended up singing the songs herself and playing all the guitar parts. Her usage of small metal objects that alter the sound of the acoustic guitar strings enable her to explore new tunings and an expanded sonic palette.
