Olivia Newton-John skillfully made the transition from popular country-pop singer to popular mainstream soft rock singer, becoming one of the most successful vocalists of the ’70s in the process. The transition itself wasn’t much of a stretch — her early-’70s hits “I Honestly Love You” and “Have You Never Been Mellow” were country only in the loosest sense — yet the extent of her success in both fields was remarkable.Read More

Totally Hot is one of the most fun albums from Olivia Newton John. Total abandon is its trademark, the atmosphere lightened up a bit, and from top to bottom it is one of her most satisfying projects. “Please Don’t Keep Me Waiting” is a girl group all grown up. Is it Newton-John’s voice or Michael Botticker’s synthesizer at the end of the first track? A little jarring for her country audience, but she takes care of them on “Dancin’ ‘Round and ‘Round,” a wonderful country-pop tune and quick about face. As with the Let Me Be There release, her name is prominently splashed on the cover and the tan background suits her well, with the mysterious look with the kerchief on the inside cover as playful as the music.Read More

Olivia Newton John’s Come on Over is country tunes, folk ballads, and more. Her own arrangement and adaptation of the traditional “Greensleeves” is exquisite, haunting, and shows Newton-John is more than just a pretty face. Her hit catalog was already nine songs deep, and “Come on Over” was the tenth of close to 30 visits to the Top 40 in a 14-year period. Fred Rose’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” and a cover of Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene” open and shut side one with the country side of things while the Diane Berglund/Jim Phillips composition “Pony Ride” is more of a piano balladRead More
