Jay McShann was 83 at the time of this CD, but the pianist-singer sounds very much in prime form and had certainly not lost his enthusiasm. He teams up with some of the better Kansas City musicians active in the late ’90s (tenor saxophonist Ahmad Alaadeen, guitarist Sonny Kenner, bassist Gerald Spaits, and drummer Todd Strait) Continue reading “Jay McShann – What A Wonderful World (1999) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

The classic 1962 album Duke Ellington & John Coltrane showcased the rising jazz saxophone innovator performing alongside the long-established piano institution. While the pairing might have portended a dynamic clash of the musical generations, instead we got a casual, respectful, and musically generous meeting of like-minded souls. These distinctive small-group sessions, featuring Duke Ellington as pianist in a blues context, are part of a group of recordings issued under the confusing titles Back to Back and Side by Side, and further reissued under the not particularly distinctive name of Blues Summit. But there should be no confusion about the high quality of music that came out of these sessions — it is all “cooking with gas” as the expression goes. Diana Panton’s tenth album is not a casual listen, but a deep delve into the feelings that accompany the fragments of a broken relationship. The record is the third in a trilogy that began with the infatuation of first-time love on 2009’s JUNO-nominated ‘Pink’ release and followed by the passion of true love on 2015’s JUNO-winning ‘RED’ album. “The topic of the album is first and foremost about traveling…” says Dhafer. “After traveling to the fourcorners of the world, in search of new sounds, here I sing differently and use vocal effects that I grew upwith. Particularly the sound effect of megaphones for the call to prayer – hence the record title Street ofMinarets.” The rest of the guests took part in the magical journey too.Featuring musical guests such as Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Dave Holland and more Continue reading “Dhafer Youssef – Street of Minarets (2023) [CD-Quality + Hi-Res] [Official Digital Release]”

The second volume of the Modern Jazz Quartet at the Music Inn was released in 1959, a year after its historic first volume with guest Jimmy Giuffre. The format on this set is similar, with pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay moving through a gorgeous medley of standards to open including “Stardust,” “I Can’t Get Started,” and “Lover Man,” with beautiful and clever counterpoint between Lewis and Jackson on the melody lines. This fourth album from Manhattan Transfer was the first for Cheryl Bentyne, who replaced Laurel Masse after the original singer’s auto accident and subsequent decision to leave the group. Though replacing Masse was difficult, Bentyne’s energy and style proved to be the perfect complement to the group’s already dynamic performance. Hits from Extensions include “Twilight Zone” and “Birdland,” which earned the group their first Grammy for Best Jazz Performance, Vocal or Instrumental.
