Coleman Hawkins recorded three sessions for Impulse Records in the early to mid ’60’s. Of the three, Today And Now is the most compelling and the unusual choice of repertoire is what sets the album apart. The Hawk plays with an abandon that is altogether effortless throughout and his versions of the traditional song ‘Go Li’l Liza’ and the fairly obscure Quincy Jones ballad ‘Quintessence’ are creatively rendered. The Genius After Hours is a 1961 album by Ray Charles. All of the songs were taken from the same three studio sessions that created the album The Great Ray Charles which featured the use of both a trio and a septet; the latter arranged by Quincy Jones. Also appearing on the album is David “Fathead” Newman on tenor and alto, as well as the trumpeter Joseph Bridgewater. It was reissued in 1985 by Atlantic Jazzlore. Just One of Those Things is a theme album comparable to one of Frank Sinatra’s uptempo swing albums of the same period (Come Fly with Me, etc.), and employs the same arranger/conductor, Billy May. Nat King Cole is a bit less effective than Sinatra at uptempo material; he tends to undersing these sprightly standards, and May saves his dramatic horn charts and percussion shots for moments when Cole is away from the microphone.
