During the 1970s, solo piano box sets were rare. When Keith Jarrett’s monolithic, ten-LP solo box, Sun Bear Concerts, arrived from ECM in 1978, the only comparable collection was The Tatum Solo Masterpieces, a six-disc set of the pianist’s ’50s sides. Jarrett’s five Japanese concerts from November of 1976 in Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, and Sapporo were completely improvised and gloriously recorded by engineer Okihiro Sugano. Bob James’ first recording for his Tappan Zee label is typically lightweight. Although Grover Washington, Jr. has two spots on soprano, and trumpeter Jon Faddis is in the brass section, James’ dated Fender Rhodes keyboard is the lead voice throughout the six pieces, which include two adaptations of classical works. The contemporary album celebrates the holiday season while honoring classic jazz and pop records of the 1950s. Today James releases the first single, “My Favorite Things,” a joyful rendition of the John Coltrane staple. A 13 date tour to support the album will launch at SF Jazz in San Francisco on November 27th and conclude at New York’s City Winery on December 14th. Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga recorded Love for Sale, their second duet album, with the knowledge that it was likely the last from Bennett. Back in 2016, two years before the sessions for Love for Sale started, Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. By the time Love for Sale was released in 2021, he’d officially retired from live performances. The Gaga collaboration wasn’t billed as Bennett’s final album, but given his health and advanced age (he turned 95 in 2021), Love for Sale is more likely than not a farewell.
