Art Pepper – Gettin’ Together! (1960) [2012, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Art Pepper - Gettin' Together! (1960) [2012, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

As a sort of follow-up to Art Pepper’s matchup with Miles Davis’ trio in the 1957 classic Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Pepper utilizes Davis’ sidemen on this 1960 near-classic. In addition to pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, trumpeter Conte Candoli makes the group a quintet on four of the eight numbers. Stan Getz / Charlie Byrd – Jazz Samba (1962) [2013, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Partly because of its Brazilian collaborators and partly because of “The Girl From Ipanema,” Getz/Gilberto is nearly always acknowledged as the Stan Getz bossa nova LP. But Jazz Samba is just as crucial and groundbreaking; after all, it came first, and in fact was the first full-fledged bossa nova album ever recorded by American jazz musicians. Stan Getz – Spring Is Here (1992) [2003, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Stan Getz - Spring Is Here (1992) [2003, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

This LP was recorded at the same sessions that resulted in The Dolphin but wasn’t released until after Stan Getz’s death. Actually the music (which features pianist Lou Levy, bassist Monty Budwig, and drummer Victor Lewis in addition to the leader’s tenor) is the equal of the original set, with “How About You,” “Easy Living,” and “Old Devil Moon” showing off Getz’s tone and strong improvising skills at their best. Stan Getz/Cal Tjader Sextet – Stan Getz/Cal Tjader Sextet (1958) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

In the vein of many a smooth West Coast jazz outing, this 1958 disc finds original cool stylist Getz paired with vibraphonist Cal Tjader on a very enjoyable selection of jazz standards and Tjader originals. The lineup includes pianist Vince Guaraldi, guitarist Eddie Duran, bassist Scott La Faro, and drummer Billy Higgins (this was one of the earliest record dates for either La Faro or Higgins, both of whom were playing with Getz at San Francisco’s Black Hawk in between recording sessions). Chick Corea – Rendezvous In New York (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Chick Corea - Rendezvous In New York (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

One of Chick Corea’s most ambitious projects was the recording of almost 60 hours of music with nine different groups over a three-week run at the Blue Note in December 2001; it must have been a challenge to choose the dozen performances for this two-CD set. Stan Getz & Bill Evans – Stan Getz & Bill Evans (1973) [2011, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Stan Getz & Bill Evans - Stan Getz & Bill Evans (1973) [2011, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The only studio meeting between Stan Getz and Bill Evans took place over two days in 1964, with the aggressive drummer Elvin Jones and either Richard Davis or Ron Carter on bass. It is peculiar that Verve shelved the results for over a decade before issuing any of the music, though it may have been felt that Getz and Evans hadn’t had enough time to achieve the desired chemistry, though there are memorable moments. Cannonball Adderley With Bill Evans – Know What I Mean? (1961) [2002, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Cannonball Adderley With Bill Evans - Know What I Mean? (1961) [2002, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

What’s better than a Bill Evans Trio album? How about a Bill Evans trio album on which the bassist is Percy Heath, the drummer is Connie Kay, and the leader is not Evans but alto sax god Cannonball Adderley, making the group actually a quartet? It’s a different sort of ensemble, to be sure, and the musical results are marvelous. Continue reading “Cannonball Adderley With Bill Evans – Know What I Mean? A reviewer of Dusty Groove wrote “Sweet Motown grooving from Grover Washington – a set that has him working with slightly larger backings than his Kudu years, but in a way that still lets his soulful horn stand strongly out front! As always, Washington is a killer talent on the soprano sax – able to inflect the instrument with these soulful twists and turns that he virtually invented at the time, and which so many others have tried to copy over the years.
