When Carly Simon signed to Jac Holzman’s Elektra Records, it was the beginning of a relationship built on trust and mutual admiration. Carly shared: “Jac paired me with producer/engineer: Eddie Kramer, and we began exploring my songs, one of which was, – “That’s The Way I Always Heard It Should Be,” a song I had written earlier that year with Jake Brackman that expressed the deep inner feelings of women. By the time we had finished, Jac thought connecting to women with noble lyrics and honest identity was unusual as a first single, but a worthy risk. Teaming up once again with producer Matt Serletic, the Matchbox 20 and Collective Soul producer who helmed the 2010 album Hard Knocks, Joe Cocker winds up branching out in slightly different directions on 2012’s Fire It Up. Where Hard Knocks wound up as a clean, polished blue-eyed soul album, Fire It Up sounds closer to Serletic’s work with Matchbox 20 — an adult pop album where the R&B is buried beneath gleaming, pulsating rock. Lionel Richie spent much of the ’90s relatively quiet, and when he attempted a comeback toward the end of the decade, it didn’t make many waves. It wasn’t until the early part of the 2000s that his profile increased considerably as his greatest-hits disc The Definitive Collection cracked the Top 20, he guest-judged on American Idol, and his daughter Nicole tramped around on the Fox reality show The Simple Life. All of this set the stage for Just for You, his 2004 return to adult contemporary soft rock. Continue reading “Lionel Richie – Just For You (2004) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Sinéad O’Connor ranked among the most distinctive and controversial pop music stars of the alternative era, the first and in many ways, the most influential of the numerous female performers whose music dominated airwaves throughout the last decade of the 20th century. Brash and outspoken — her shaved head, angry visage, and shapeless wardrobe a direct challenge to popular culture’s long-prevailing notions of femininity and sexuality — O’Connor irrevocably altered the image of women in rock. Diana Krall paid tribute to her father on Glad Rag Doll, the 2012 album sourced from his collection of 78-rpm records, and, in a sense, its 2015 successor Wallflower is a companion record of sorts, finding the singer revisiting songs from her childhood. Like many kids of the 20th century, she grew up listening to the radio, which meant she was weaned on the soft rock superhits of the ’70s — Continue reading “Diana Krall – Wallflower (2015) [Deluxe Edition, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Falling somewhere between the pop sensibilities of Ten Summoner’s Tales and the searching ambition of The Soul Cages, Mercury Falling is one of Sting’s tighter records, even if it fails to compel as much as his previous solo albums. Though he doesn’t flaunt his jazz aspirations as he did in the mid-’80s, Mercury Falling feels more serious than The Dream of the Blue Turtles, primarily because of its reserved, high-class production and execution. If Dream of the Blue Turtles was an unabashedly pretentious affair, it looks positively lighthearted in comparison to Sting’s sophomore effort, Nothing Like the Sun, one of the most doggedly serious pop albums ever recorded. This is an album where the only up-tempo track, the only trifle — the cheerfully stiff white-funk “We’ll Be Together” Continue reading “Sting – …Nothing Like the Sun (1987) [Official Digital Release] [2022 Release, Hi-Res]”

Nyro peaked early, and Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, just her second album, remains her best. It’s not only because it contains the original versions of no less than three songs that were big hits for other artists: “Sweet Blindness” (covered by the 5th Dimension), “Stoned Soul Picnic” (also covered by the 5th Dimension), and “Eli’s Comin'” (done by Three Dog Night).
