Although they have common recording origins, two of the three singles, “It’s Now or Never” and “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” were very quirky by the standards of Elvis songs at the time — the former inspired by Elvis’s admiration for Tony Martin’s 1949 hit “There’s No Tomorrow,” while the latter was recorded at the request of Col. Parker as a favor to his wife. They add to the diversity of sounds on this record, which shows a mature Elvis Presley. Continue reading “Elvis Presley – Elvis Is Back! Boz Scaggs – Out Of The Blues (2018)

Boz Scaggs - Out Of The Blues (2018)

Out of the Blues is the nineteenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Boz Scaggs. The album, a mixture of vintage classics and four original compositions by close friend Jack “Applejack” Walroth, is the last in a trilogy that began with 2013’s Memphis and continued with 2015’s A Fool to Care. Boz Scaggs considers Out of the Blues to be the final installment in a (primarily covers) trilogy that began with 2013’s Memphis and continued with 2015’s A Fool to Care, excellent outings that reflected Scaggs’ desire to reach back into the cradle of inspiration. This set looks back to his 1965 debut album Boz (a solo acoustic covers set released only in Sweden by Polydor) and 1997’s criminally overlooked Come on Home, a woolly, house-rocking collection of (mostly) vintage R&B and soul-blues covers, for its foundation. Earth, Wind & Fire – Discography (1971 – 2013)

Earth, Wind & Fire - Discography (1971 - 2013)

Earth, Wind & Fire were one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the ’70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF’s all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. Earth, Wind & Fire - Head To The Sky (1973) [2016, Audio Fidelity Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]

As phenomenally popular as Earth, Wind & Fire was from the mid-’70s to the early ’80s, it’s easy to forget that the band was hardly an overnight success. With Head to the Sky — EWF’s fourth album overall, second with Philip Bailey, and second for Columbia — Maurice White’s very spiritual and ambitious brand of soul and funk was starting to pay off commercially. Patti LaBelle – Lady Marmalade: The Best Of Patti & LaBelle (1995)

Patti LaBelle - Lady Marmalade: The Best Of Patti & LaBelle (1995)

The concept behind Lady Marmalade: The Best of Patti and LaBelle is to draw eight tracks apiece from LaBelle’s chart heyday as a group and the first five years (1977-1982) of Patti LaBelle’s solo career, which she spent with Epic. Is it a worthwhile summation? That depends on what you’re looking for. The LaBelle tracks constitute a serviceable overview, featuring their four chart hits (“Lady Marmalade,” the R&B Top Ten “What Can I Do for You?,” “Get You Somebody New,” and “Isn’t It a Shame”); actually, the more extensive Something Silver compilation doesn’t have them all. Plus, there are four songs written or co-written by Nona Hendryx, an important component of their repertoire. Continue reading “Patti LaBelle – Lady Marmalade: The Best Of Patti & LaBelle (1995)”

Big Joe Turner - All The Classic Hits 1938-1952 (2003) [5CDs Box set]

Classic Hits 1938-52 is a five-disc, 123-track collection of Big Joe Turner’s earliest recording sessions before finding stardom with his mid-’50s R&B sides. While this JSP set isn’t extravagant, it’s a luxury to have Turner’s sides for National, Aladdin, Freedom, MGM, and Imperial remastered and together in one collection. This classic 1964 recording by Ray Charles includes 12 vintage tracks performed to perfection. His voice is in great shape, and the recording by Wally Heider is a marvel for its day; all the instruments are placed nicely with Charles’ voice out front where it belongs. There’s a slinky version of “Hallelujah I Love Her So,” the musicians creating nice little changes behind Charles’ soulful nuances. The Drifters – Rockin’ & Driftin’ The Drifters Box (1996) [3CD-Set]

The Drifters - Rockin' & Driftin' The Drifters Box (1996) [3CD-Set]

Vocal groups and styles came and went from the 1950s through the 1980s, but somehow the Drifters evolved and persevered, spanning doo-wop and disco before being relegated exclusively to the oldies touring circuit. Rockin’ & Driftin’ collects highlights from the group’s embryonic Clyde McPhatter-led era (beginning with 1953’s “Money Honey”) into the mid-’70s, when the group still had some standing in the U.K. “On Broadway,” “There Goes My Baby,” “Up on the Roof,” “Under the Boardwalk”–they’re all included in this handsome, thoroughly annotated three-disc box set.
