Everybody’s in Show-Biz is a double album with one record devoted to stories from the road and another devoted to songs from the road. It could be labeled “the drunkest album ever made,” without a trace of hyperbole, since this is a charmingly loose, rowdy, silly record. It comes through strongest on the live record, of course, as it’s filled with Ray Davies’ notoriously campy vaudevellian routine (dig the impromptu “Banana Boat Song” that leads into “Skin & Bone,” or the rollicking “Baby Face”). It was do or die for Toto on the group’s fourth album, and they rose to the challenge. Largely dispensing with the anonymous studio rock that had characterized their first three releases, the band worked harder on its melodies, made sure its simple lyrics treated romantic subjects, augmented Bobby Kimball’s vocals by having other group members sing, brought in ringers like Timothy B. To be fair, this six-CD set is really for completists only, since the price tag is likely to put off anyone else. But if you’ve been hooked on the beautiful guitar work of Hank Marvin and the surprisingly muscularity of the band, delving deeper is a very good idea. Not only do you get all the big hits — like “Apache,” “F.B.I.,” and “The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt” (or even the wonderfully named “I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Arthur”) — you get literally everything. “My Only True Friend,” from Southern Blood, Gregg Allman’s final album, is a cipher, much like the man himself — private, reserved, and complex. Though twin, ringing, blues-drenched guitars introduce it, the song just as quickly morphs into a ballad: “You and I both know, this river will surely flow to an end/Keep me in your heart…I hope you’re haunted by the music of my soul…But you and I both know, the road is my only true friend….” The blues guitars cascade in again, adding resonance. With his laid-back rootsy style, J.J. Cale was best known for writing “After Midnight” and “Cocaine,” songs that Eric Clapton later made into hits. But Cale’s influence wasn’t only through songwriting — his distinctly loping sense of rhythm and shuffling boogie became the blueprint for the adult-oriented roots rock of Clapton and Mark Knopfler, among others. Cale’s refusal to vary the sound of his music over the course of his career caused some critics to label him as a one-trick pony, but he managed to build a dedicated cult following with his sporadically released recordings.
