When Steve Marriott left the Small Faces in 1969, the three remaining members brought in guitarist Ron Wood and lead singer Rod Stewart to complete the lineup and changed their name to the Faces, which was only appropriate since the group now only slightly resembled the mod-pop group of the past. Instead, the Faces were a rough, sloppy rock & roll band, able to pound out a rocker like “Had Me a Real Good Time,” a blues ballad like “Tell Everyone,” or a folk number like “Richmond” all in one album. Stewart, already becoming a star in his own right Continue reading “Faces – Discography (1970-2015)”

Street Survivors appeared in stores just days before Lynyrd Skynyrd’s touring plane crashed, tragically killing many members of the band, including lead singer and songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. Consequently, it’s hard to see Street Survivors outside of the tragedy, especially since the best-known song here, “That Smell,” reeks of death and foreboding Continue reading “Lynyrd Skynyrd – Street Survivors (1977) {1994, Ultimate MasterDisc, 24-Karat Gold Disc, Remastered}”

Electric Light Orchestra continued on their winning Top 40 ways with the release of Discovery. Now pared down to the basic four-piece unit, Jeff Lynne continued to dominate the band and they still got their hits (this time around it was the smash “Don’t Bring Me Down”). Elsewhere on the disc there was, of note, “Last Train to London” and “Confusion.” Though Discovery charted well, it was becoming obvious that ELO were starting to run themselves out of useful Beatles hooks Continue reading “Electric Light Orchestra – Discovery (1979) {1993, MasterSound, 24-Karat Gold Disc, Remastered}”

This is the album where Jeff Lynne finally found the sound he’d wanted since co-founding Electric Light Orchestra three years earlier. Up to this point, most of the group’s music had been self-contained — Lynne, Richard Tandy, et al., providing whatever was needed, vocally or instrumentally, even if it meant overdubbing their work layer upon layer Continue reading “Electric Light Orchestra – Eldorado (1974) {1993, DCC Compact Classics, Remastered}”

Less than four months after issuing the landmark and autobiographical Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975), Elton John re-emerged with a new band and a slightly modified sound. However, the departure of Dee Murray (bass) and Nigel Olsson (drums) would ultimately begin a deceleration in terms of John’s success, which rivalled only the Beatles’ and Elvis Presley’s in terms of global acclaim Continue reading “Elton John – Rock of the Westies (1975) {2012, Audio Fidelity, HDCD Remastered}”

From a lyrical perspective, 1991’s Roll the Bones is quite possibly Rush’s darkest album (most of the songs deal with death in no uncertain terms), but from a musical point of view, the record treads territory (highbrow melodic hard rock) similar to its recent predecessors, with only a few surprises thrown in for good measure. Once The Stranger became a hit, Billy Joel quickly re-entered the studio with producer Phil Ramone to record the follow-up, 52nd Street. Instead of breaking from the sound of The Stranger, Joel chose to expand it, making it more sophisticated and somewhat jazzy. Often, his moves sounded as if they were responses to Steely Dan — indeed, his phrasing and melody for “Zanzibar” is a direct homage to Donald Fagen circa Continue reading “Billy Joel – 52nd Street (1978) {2010, Audio Fidelity, HDCD Remastered}”
