Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to their combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana’s distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early ’70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band’s early personnel gradually departed, leaving the name in the hands of Carlos Santana, who guided the group to consistent commercial success over the next quarter-century. British singer and guitarist Chris Rea has enjoyed a run of popularity in Europe during the late ’80s and early ’90s after almost a decade of previous recording. Rea started out performing with a local group called Magdalene, taking David Coverdale’s place; the band won a national talent contest in 1975 as the Beautiful Losers, but still failed to get a record contract. While the band did record original material, they were best-known for their loud, heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs, blowing them up to epic proportions and bathing them in a trippy, distorted haze. Love Beads And Meditation combines their two albums, Green Tambourine (1967) and Jungle Marmalade (1968), which mashed up Soft Pop Bubblegum gems with the band’s growling Rock tendencies and confused the hell out of everybody.
