Frijid Pink’s self-titled debut album is a slashing, seriously soulful example of late-’60s Detroit rock near its best. Although they never registered with critics or rock historians the way MC5 or the Stooges did, Frijid Pink had obviously learned something in the course of two years on the road, and with Mike Valvano producing, they were able to channel the excitement of their work onto the grooves of this album very neatly. Egon Bondy’s Happy Hearts Club Banned is an album by Czech underground band The Plastic People of the Universe. It was recorded in 1974/75, mainly at Houska Castle, enabled by the castle’s then warden Svatopluk Karásek, with some songs being recorded in Prague. The album could not be officially released and distributed under the former Communist regime in Czechoslovakia; instead fans duplicated tapes with one another, often resulting in poor technical quality. It was released in 1978 in France by SCOPA Invisible Production. Culled from several shows taking place in the Pacific Northwest on summer tours of 1973 and 1974, Believe It if You Need It zeroes in on the Grateful Dead in a particularly playful and comfortable phase, with the Deadhead-populated region and the Dead’s first taste of financial success giving their playing in this time a more carefree fluidity. Certainly by 1973, they had come a long way from their hand-to-mouth beginnings, establishing their own label, touring with an over-the-top sound system, and showing up to larger crowds every year. Five CD set. Established in 1967 at the height of their powers, The Beatles’ Apple operation saw the group embrace and encourage a wealth of contemporary musical talent, offering studio time and demo facilities alongside recording and publishing contracts. This unique opportunity attracted artists and songwriters from across the musical spectrum, and Good As Gold presents a snapshot of that talent, spanning the years 1967 to 1975. From the psychedelic tinged sounds of the mid-late 1960s onwards, the label matured and evolved alongside it’s audience and remains as compelling today as it did during those halcyon days. Now serving up a third installment of gut-busting, freewheeling, acid-soaked hard rock, I’m a Freak Baby is the gift that keeps on giving. U.K. archivists Grapefruit Records first launched the series in 2016, scooping the cream off the top of England’s heaping barrel of late-1960s/early-’70s sludge rock, only to uncover yet more layers on their 2019 follow-up, I’m a Freak 2 Baby. Like the late ’60s that had just come to a shuddering close, 1970 was a confusing time for music in the U.K. (and everywhere else too). Psychedelia was fading out, bubblegum was on its last bounce, prog was getting fired up, and bands were getting heavier, moving to the country, and searching for mellow vibes. An expansive overview of the year would make for some very eclectic listening; the Grapefruit label chose to narrow the scope down just a bit on their three-disc collection New Moon’s in the Sky: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1970.
