Despite Jackson’s anxious demeanor and shaky pop/rock presence, I’m the Man holds together quite well as his second attempt. Reaching number 12 in the U.K. and a respectable number 22 in the U.S., the album managed to net him a number five hit in his homeland with the insightful “It’s Different for Girls,” which revealed Jackson’s adeptness at philosophizing and his perception of examining the sexes, a trait which would follow him throughout his career. West Side Story was a bit of an unusual session for several reasons. First, the popularity of both the Broadway musical and the film version that followed meant that there were many records being made of its music. Second, rather than woodshed on the selections prior to entering the studio, the Oscar Peterson Trio spontaneously created impressions of the musical’s themes on the spot. “Something’s Coming” seems like a series of vignettes, constantly shifting its mood, as if moving from one scene to the next. Although it probably wasn’t meant as such, this self-titled album is Emitt Rhodes’ definitive statement. Soon after disbanding the Merry-Go-Round (of “Live” fame), Rhodes scored a solo deal with Dunhill.
