Vai shares, “This record was written and recorded in somewhat of a stream of consciousness in 1991 within perhaps a 2-week period as an answer to my desire to have a particular kind of music to listen to when I was riding my Harley Davison Motorcycle with my friends. It’s reminiscent of a certain type of rock music I enjoyed as a teenager in the 1970’s. These recordings sat on the shelf for over 30 years and are being released now in 2023. Chaos & Colour, the energetic and triumphant 25th studio album from British hard rock legends and progenators Uriah Heep, bristles with explosive classic rock guitars, supreme harmonies, and Heep’s famously generous keyboard foundation. Led by founding member Mick Box, it is no surprise that themes of light, love and, ultimately, positivity are constant through the eleven tracks. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s first solo album appeared before he formed Yellow Magic Orchestra in late 1978, after the young keyboardist had earned his M.A. in music from Tokyo University. Six long instrumentals make up this CD, but apart from a taste for Asian-sounding synth lines, they hint at very little of what was to come in YMO. Tony Christie – Is This the Way to Amarillo? No! This time he’s winding his way to Dublin, Limerick, Tullamore, and Carrickfergus. 44 Years after the release of his million-selling hit ‘Amarillo”, Tony Christie rounds off his long career with a nostalgic trip to his family’s Irish roots – and has produced an Irish folk album of the very highest musical and audio quality. The second volume of the Modern Jazz Quartet at the Music Inn was released in 1959, a year after its historic first volume with guest Jimmy Giuffre. The format on this set is similar, with pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay moving through a gorgeous medley of standards to open including “Stardust,” “I Can’t Get Started,” and “Lover Man,” with beautiful and clever counterpoint between Lewis and Jackson on the melody lines. This box set is the definitive version of the album, containing all the shows that make up the record newly mixed by Ben Findlay from the original multi-tracks, mastered by Andy Pearce and overseen by Guitarist Scott Gorham. It goes to dispel the rumors that the album was extensively overdubbed in the studio and it’s presented here as the shows were intended with the rawness of a band, they were at the top of their game night after night. This fourth album from Manhattan Transfer was the first for Cheryl Bentyne, who replaced Laurel Masse after the original singer’s auto accident and subsequent decision to leave the group. Though replacing Masse was difficult, Bentyne’s energy and style proved to be the perfect complement to the group’s already dynamic performance. Hits from Extensions include “Twilight Zone” and “Birdland,” which earned the group their first Grammy for Best Jazz Performance, Vocal or Instrumental. Energisers wanted! (in times like the present) The likes of Paul O’Brien, the British artist of Irish stock has covered a remarkable musical waterfront. Now he has reached Stockfisch-grade maturity. O’Brien is a courageous man. And courage it takes to leave everything behind and start a new life on Canada’s most western shores – a life in which music was initially no longer meant to play a vital part. Billy J. Kramer was one of the weaker yet more enduringly popular of the early acts to emerge from Liverpool, following in the wake of the Beatles. But even with a career on the pop charts that extended a year past the thickest part of the Merseybeat boom, the idea of a 121-song four-CD compilation of Kramer’s work is still overkill in almost any context.
