If Dream of the Blue Turtles was an unabashedly pretentious affair, it looks positively lighthearted in comparison to Sting’s sophomore effort, Nothing Like the Sun, one of the most doggedly serious pop albums ever recorded. This is an album where the only up-tempo track, the only trifle — the cheerfully stiff white-funk “We’ll Be Together” Continue reading “Sting – …Nothing Like the Sun (1987) [Official Digital Release] [2022 Release, Hi-Res]”

Nyro peaked early, and Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, just her second album, remains her best. It’s not only because it contains the original versions of no less than three songs that were big hits for other artists: “Sweet Blindness” (covered by the 5th Dimension), “Stoned Soul Picnic” (also covered by the 5th Dimension), and “Eli’s Comin'” (done by Three Dog Night). Coleman Hawkins’ 1957 session for Riverside, aside from an oral documentary record in a short-lived series, was his only recording for the label under his name. Yet producer Orrin Keepnews had the good sense to invite the legendary tenor saxophonist to pick his own musicians, and Hawkins surprised him by asking for young boppers J.J. Johnson and Idrees Sulieman in addition to the potent rhythm section of Hank Jones, Oscar Pettiford, Barry Galbraith, and Jo Jones. While he was as innovative as Jimmy Page, as tasteful as Eric Clapton, and nearly as visionary as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck never achieved the same commercial success as any of those contemporaries, primarily because of the haphazard way he approached his career. After Rod Stewart left the Jeff Beck Group in 1971, Beck never worked with a charismatic lead singer who could have helped sell his music to a wide audience. Neil Young embarked on a 2019 European tour with Promise of the Real only two weeks after the passing of Elliot Roberts, his life-long friend and manager. Young viewed this tour as a living tribute to Roberts, claiming in the liner notes to Noise & Flowers — a 2022 document of the 2019 trek — that “Playing in his memory (made it) one of the most special tours ever. For listeners who had caught up with the Cardigans on their breakout album, Life, the group’s third album was a confusing pastiche which included several conventional pop songs, but also added tracks with left-field arrangements and some (comparatively) disturbing lyrics. In reality, however, the group had simply returned to the mood and feel of their debut album. Continue reading “The Cardigans – First Band On The Moon (1996) [2022 Release, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Lenny Kravitz’s greatest gift is that he’s a master synthesist, pulling together different sounds and styles from eras past to create a sound that isn’t necessarily blazingly original, but fresh due to his craft and sheer mastery of the studio. Since he was an unabashed classicist, his records often suffered the brunt of nasty criticism, but they were often very good, particularly early in his career before he indulged in the mannerisms of guitar-blasting stadium rock. Blood, Sweat & Tears had a hard act to follow in recording their third album. Nevertheless, BS&T constructed a convincing, if not quite as impressive, companion to their previous hit. David Clayton-Thomas remained an enthusiastic blues shouter, and the band still managed to put together lively arrangements, especially on the Top 40 hits “Hi-De-Ho” and “Lucretia Mac Evil.” Elsewhere, they re-created the previous album’s jazzing up of Laura Nyro (“He’s a Runner”) and Traffic (“40,000 Headmen”), although their pretentiousness, on the extended “Symphony/Sympathy for the Devil,” Continue reading “Blood, Sweat & Tears – Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 (1970) [2003, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
