Formed in 2020, Wigmore Soloists is a chamber ensemble made up of a roster of outstanding musicians, led by Isabelle van Keulen and Michael Collins. An associate ensemble of the iconic London concert venue Wigmore Hall, it is the first one to be given the honour of using the name. The core line-up of string quintet, wind quintet and piano makes it possible to perform a wide and varied repertoire, and for its first recording the ensemble has chosen one of the larger works in the chamber music literature, in terms of duration as well as the forces involved. The album’s 12 tracks are a quite delightful mix, with one song especially outstanding in its beauty: ‘Made in the Shade’, devoted to Sara K. ‘s fellow artist and kindred spirit Chris Jones who died in 2005. This album is surely one of her very best, maybe THE best. It is certainly no less than sensational. Like good wine, this one has it all, that inner glow, that shining light that is the true sign of real art. Guitars, exotic instruments including the harp form an ideal backdrop for the singer Sara K. sounding articulate to the highest degree, her performance mature, completely lacking any harshness whatsoever. This album, the group’s third, was where they showed just how far their talents extended across the musical landscape, from blues to R&B to classical rock. In contrast to their hastily recorded debut, or its successor, done to stretch their performance and composition range, A Salty Dog was recorded in a reasonable amount of time, giving the band a chance to fully develop their ideas. On the occasion of his label’s 35th anniversary, fonè’s Giulio Cesare Ricci wanted to realize an album dedicated to jazz. “In these years I have recorded many ensembles: duo / trio / big band/quartet. The peculiarity of this album is that I chose a track for each jazz production realized over the years .. each recording had different artists, different recording locations but one thing was constant, Giulio Cesare Ricci and his analog and tube Recording System.” Continue reading “Giulio Cesare Ricci – 35th Fonè Anniversary Jazz Recordings (2018) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Half-Speed Mastered

In 1972, Jethro Tull released the instant classic, ‘Thick As A Brick’. 50 years on and the album is still revered as one of rock’s and progressive rock’s most definitive and pioneering albums. To celebrate the 50th anniversary, ‘Thick As A Brick’ has been reproduced in its original format, the legendary 12-page newspaper. The vinyl is a half-speed master of Steven Wilson’s 2012 remix. Unlike any other records on the market, the album is set inside a broadsheet newspaper, ‘The St. Cleve Chronicle & Linwell Advertiser’. The newspaper includes many news articles packed full of continuing jokes, a crossword, connect-the-dots and much more.
