APO presents what must be the greatest Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute collection ever made. Vaughan single-handedly ignited the blues revival of the ’80s. His eclectic and fiery style bridged the gap between blues and rock like no other artist had since the late ’60s. Vaughan’s tragic death in 1990 only emphasized his influence on both the blues and American rock & roll. Texas Hurricane features six of Vaughan’s classic albums – Texas Flood, Couldn’t Stand the Weather, Soul to Soul, In Step, Family Style and The Sky Is Cryin’ – specially remastered for SACD by Sterling Sound. As a solo artist, Diana Ross is one of the most successful female singers of the rock era. If you factor in her work as the lead singer of the Supremes in the 1960s, she may be the most successful. With her friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin, Ross formed the Primettes vocal quartet in 1959. In 1960, they were signed to local Motown Records, changing their name to the Supremes in 1961. Continue reading “Diana Ross – Discography (1970-2021)”

With Ringo, Ringo Starr finally put his solo career in gear in 1973, after serving notice with back-to-back Top Ten singles in 1971 and 1972 that he had more to offer than his eccentric first two solo albums. Ringo was a big-budget pop album produced by Richard Perry and featuring Ringo’s former Beatles bandmates as songwriters, singers, and instrumentalists. After years as one of the most prolific and successful songwriters in pop music, Carole King emerged in the ’70s with Tapestry, an album that catapulted her to the forefront of the singer/songwriter movement. While she had mined her back catalog for that album, she relied more heavily on songs written with new collaborator Toni Stern for Music. A great overview of the music from this group, one of the founders of the California sound in the late ’60s. This is a good collection of their unforgettable electric folk-pop songs, including “Monday, Monday” and “California Dreamin’.” (Originally released in August 1969 by Dunhill Records, 16 of Their Greatest Hits, it was reissued on CD by MCA Records in 1986.) Legendary Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (b. April 14, 1945, Weston-super-Mare, England) shifted his musical focus away from hard rock in the late ’90s and started concentrating on his love of Renaissance-era music. He formed Blackmore’s Night with his fiancée, vocalist/lyricist Candice Night (b. May 8, 1971, Hauppauge, Long Island, New York), and recruited other musicians from around the world to combine elements of world music, Renaissance, new age, folk, and rock & roll. Blackmore didn’t exactly retire his Fender Stratocaster, but he plays acoustic guitar almost exclusively in Blackmore’s Night. Continue reading “Blackmore’s Night – Discography”
