Thanks for the Dance is the fifteenth and final studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, released through Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings on November 22, 2019. It is the first release following Cohen’s death in November 2016, and features contributions with musicians including Daniel Lanois, Beck, Jennifer Warnes, Damien Rice and Leslie Feist. After Service is the second live album by Yellow Magic Orchestra, directly following their (at the time) final studio album, Service. The album features former ABC member David Palmer on additional drums. A film version was released alongside the album. After Service features “Kageki na Shukujo” (過激な淑女 “Radical Lady”), which was released in a studio version as a single, but does not feature on any of their albums (compilations excepted). Service was the seventh and, at the time, final studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra. The band dissolved the following year after a world tour, but would later reform in 1993 for a one-off reunion album, Technodon. Like ×∞Multiplies, it contains a mixture of YMO songs and comedy sketches performed by Super Eccentric Theater, or S.E.T. The first Dutch/German edition of the album omitted the sketches, effectively cutting the album’s length in half. In 1999, the album was remastered under Hosono’s supervision with new liner notes provided by lyricist Peter Barakan. Posturing themselves as the synth-pop stars they already were (though only strictly speaking), Naughty Boys is more of a landmark for Japanese pop than electronic music. Beginning with the synth-pop hit “Kimi Ni Mune Kyun” (featuring vocals just as accomplished as its production), the album clearly sounds different; previous YMO material had never sounded explicitly like Asian pop music before. That said, it’s still a solid album of commercial synth-pop and showed the group was still cultivating their Western connections, with help from guitarist Bill Nelson. This 40th anniversary edition is a 4CD+2xDVD package. The album has been remixed by Steven Wilson, with his stereo mix appearing on the first CD and a new 5.1 surround mix housed on one of the two DVDs. Three further CDs offer a host of unreleased recordings and a previously unreleased live concert performed in The Netherlands in March 1980. As well as the 5.1 mix of the album the two DVDs also offer a flat transfer of the original 1979 mix, surround sound mixes of 13 associated recordings and hi-res stereo mixes of all 15 of them. This set documents a historic occasion. Although Coleman Hawkins had been an admirer of Duke Ellington’s music for at least 35 years at this point and Ellington had suggested they record together at least 20 years prior to their actual meeting in 1962, this was their first (and only) meeting on record. Although it would have been preferable to hear the great tenor performing with the full orchestra, his meeting with Ellington and an all-star group taken out of the big band does feature such greats as Ray Nance on cornet and violin, trombonist Lawrence Brown, altoist Johnny Hodges, and baritonist Harry Carney.
