Following in the footsteps of many, the soundtrack for Martin Scorcese’s Goodfellas (based on Nicholas Pileggi’s Wiseguy) uses period music for definition — in this case, however, music from the ’40s through the early ’70s is utilized. The selections themselves are all good — well chosen and not overused songs that range from “Rags to Riches,” sung by Tony Bennett, to “Layla (Piano Exit)” from Derek & the Dominos, passing through “Speedo” from the Cadillacs, “Life Is But a Dream” from the Harptones, “Baby I Love You” from Aretha Franklin (in fine voice here), and “Sunshine of Your Love” from Cream. Get the Knack is the debut album by the Knack, released in June 1979. At the time, the album was one of the most successful debuts in history, selling over one million copies in less than two months and spending five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. The lead single from the album, “My Sharona”, was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and number one on Billboard’s Top Pop Singles of 1979 year end chart. An integral part of the early 1980s thrash metal movement, New Jersey quartet Overkill were formed in 1980 by vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and guitarist Bobby Gustafson, and also included bassist D.D. Verni and drummer Rat Skates (later replaced by Sid Falck). The band garnered a reputation for brutal, pounding speed and technique, but lacked the musical diversity to compete with heavy hitters like Metallica; still, Overkill built up a strong following in the metal underground with albums like 1985’s Taking Over and 1988’s Under the Influence.
