The original leaders of Gov’t Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, were well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock’s most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project Gov’t Mule, a band in which the Allman Brothers’ influence was apparent but complicated with the psychedelic, bluesy power trio feel of Cream. During 1944-1958, Dinah Washington recorded jazz, blues, R&B, pop, and even gospel, excelling in each area. In 1959 after she had a major pop hit in “What a Difference a Day Makes,” the quality of her recordings declined as she was mostly backed by large anonymous studio orchestras in an attempt to duplicate that song’s commercial success. The arrangements were often more suitable for a country singer than for Washington, and her own singing seemed exaggerated and overly mannered. Because more than half of the 35 songs on this two-disc retrospective of Marianne Faithfull’s 1979-95 output come from her three great albums — Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances, and Strange Weather — or are previously unreleased outtakes or B-sides from them, A Perfect Stranger: The Island Anthology makes a fine primer to Faithfull’s often challenging, always mesmerizing (or would that be always challenging, often mesmerizing?) music. “Ballad of the Soldier’s Wife,” her solid contribution to 1985’s Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill, is also included, giving Faithfull’s hauntingly tragic voice the resonance and attention it demands.
