There are few bands in the annals of rock music as star-crossed in their history as Badfinger. Pegged as one of the most promising British groups of the late ’60s and the one world-class talent ever signed to the Beatles’ Apple Records label that remained with the label, Badfinger enjoyed the kind of success in England and America that most other bands could only envy. Yet a string of memorable hit singles — “Come and Get It,” “No Matter What,” “Day After Day,” and “Baby Blue” — saw almost no reward from that success. After the harrowing Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon returned to calmer, more conventional territory with Imagine. While the album had a softer surface, it was only marginally less confessional than its predecessor. Underneath the sweet strings of “Jealous Guy” lies a broken and scared man, the jaunty “Crippled Inside” is a mocking assault at an acquaintance, and “Imagine” is a paean for peace in a world with no gods, possessions, or classes, where everyone is equal. Jethro Tull were a unique phenomenon in popular music history. Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal, impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis, but that didn’t dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums. At the same time, critics rarely took them seriously, and they were off the cutting edge of popular music since the end of the 1970s. Continue reading “Jethro Tull – Discography”

Instead of trying to compete with a newer, fashion-conscious pop marketplace, Linda Ronstadt removed herself from the rat race, recording an album of traditional pop standards with Nelson Riddle. Ronstadt’s voice isn’t always showcased to a fine effect on these songs, but the record is an interesting change of pace. And it would have been more interesting if she hadn’t repeated its formula on her next two records. Despite the fact that Seven and the Ragged Tiger couldn’t match the unrestrained pop/rock ebullience of 1982’s Rio, Duran Duran put three of the album’s singles in the Top Ten, taking it to number one in the U.K. Even though “The Reflex” gave the band their first number one hit, there’s an overabundance of fancy glitz and dancefloor flamboyancy running through it, unlike “New Moon on Monday”‘s straight-ahead appeal or “Union of the Snake”‘s mysterious, almost taboo flair. This album was the group’s magnum opus in the perception of many onlookers and fans, and it still plays well, though its flaws are more evident than they were at the time. The “Song of Scheherazade,” really a suite for the group supported by the London Symphony Orchestra and a chorus, started with guitarist-composer Michael Dunford, who had a personal fascination with the medieval literary work Tales of 1,001 Arabian Nights Continue reading “Renaissance – Scheherazade And Other Stories (1975) [1983, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

The rating of this six-CD set is no joke — yes, Bill Haley was supposed to be an irrelevant artist during the 1960s, but he did, in fact, generate well over 100 good and far-better-than-decent sides that are contained in this set. No, there’s nothing remotely as earth-shattering or important as his best work for Decca from 1954-1955, and even most hardcore fans of that material may find the cost of this set difficult to justify; but take it from someone who shelled out for this box, it’s worth a LOT more than you’d ever guess without hearing it — Haley and his band still knew how to work a song, as demonstrated several dozen times on this set. Showaddywaddy had more UK hits in the 1970s than any other act…including Abba! From their winning appearance on an edition of ‘New Faces’, the ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ of the day, to become runners-up in the series’ ‘All Winners Final’, it took just a matter of months until the band released and secured their debut hit, ‘Hey Rock And Roll’, which reached #2 in the UK Singles Chart. If ever there were an act that deserved more than it got, it was Johnny Burnette and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio. These three young men — Johnny and his brother Dorsey and guitarist extraordinaire Paul Burlison — were the authentic rockabilly article, hailing, like Elvis Presley, from Memphis proper. They were rawer than Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis put together and at their best more exciting to listen to. And while Burnette went on to write hits for Ricky Nelson and score a few of his own, it’s the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio sides — none of which ever charted — for which he is most remembered. Rock icon and multi-instrumentalist Roger Taylor introduces his new solo album Outsider. With much of Outsider recorded during lockdown, this new album finds Taylor in a reflective mood, conveying a palpable sense of isolation, concerns over the passing of time, and tellingly dedicated “to all the outsiders, those who feel left on the sidelines”. A highly personal project, Outsider’s instrumentation is almost entirely performed by Taylor, with his vocals matching the mood-piece atmosphere. After both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley left Miles Davis’ quintet, he was caught in the web of seeking suitable replacements. It was a period of trial and error for him that nonetheless yielded some legendary recordings (Sketches of Spain, for one). One of those is Someday My Prince Will Come. The lineup is Davis, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and alternating drummers Jimmy Cobb and Philly Jo Jones. Lee Ritenour, also known as ‘Captain Fingers’, began his career at the young age of 16 and has recorded over 42 albums, charting over 30 instrumental and vocal contemporary jazz hits since 1976. One of his most popular songs was the hit single “Is It You”. His third studio album, Captain Fingers, was released in 1977 and besides the titles track, includes his cover of the Stevie Wonder song “Isn’t She Lovely”.
