After the harrowing Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon returned to calmer, more conventional territory with Imagine. While the album had a softer surface, it was only marginally less confessional than its predecessor. Underneath the sweet strings of “Jealous Guy” lies a broken and scared man, the jaunty “Crippled Inside” is a mocking assault at an acquaintance, and “Imagine” is a paean for peace in a world with no gods, possessions, or classes, where everyone is equal. Despite the fact that Seven and the Ragged Tiger couldn’t match the unrestrained pop/rock ebullience of 1982’s Rio, Duran Duran put three of the album’s singles in the Top Ten, taking it to number one in the U.K. Even though “The Reflex” gave the band their first number one hit, there’s an overabundance of fancy glitz and dancefloor flamboyancy running through it, unlike “New Moon on Monday”‘s straight-ahead appeal or “Union of the Snake”‘s mysterious, almost taboo flair. The rating of this six-CD set is no joke — yes, Bill Haley was supposed to be an irrelevant artist during the 1960s, but he did, in fact, generate well over 100 good and far-better-than-decent sides that are contained in this set. No, there’s nothing remotely as earth-shattering or important as his best work for Decca from 1954-1955, and even most hardcore fans of that material may find the cost of this set difficult to justify; but take it from someone who shelled out for this box, it’s worth a LOT more than you’d ever guess without hearing it — Haley and his band still knew how to work a song, as demonstrated several dozen times on this set. If ever there were an act that deserved more than it got, it was Johnny Burnette and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio. These three young men — Johnny and his brother Dorsey and guitarist extraordinaire Paul Burlison — were the authentic rockabilly article, hailing, like Elvis Presley, from Memphis proper. They were rawer than Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis put together and at their best more exciting to listen to. And while Burnette went on to write hits for Ricky Nelson and score a few of his own, it’s the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio sides — none of which ever charted — for which he is most remembered.
