Neil Young had just released his third solo album After the Gold Rush a few months before he played Carnegie Hall in December of 1970, where he offered up a new set of introspective songs that were relatively toned down when compared to the stomping full-band jamming of 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. This would just be the beginning of a run of classic albums that continued throughout the ’70s, and both sides of Young’s musical personality — the hushed and patient songwriter side, and the side that tended toward rugged rock — were integral to how that peerless run played out. Live At Alice Tully Hall – January 27, 1973 – 2nd Show captures Lou Reed’s New York City live debut as a solo artist, at the Lincoln Center venue during his Transformer tour. He was backed by The Tots, a tight, funky, twin-guitar combo whose gritty bar-band approach offered an energized accompaniment to Reed’s material, whether that was the Velvets (“Heroin,” “Sweet Jane”) or songs from his first two solo albums, Walk On The Wild Side and Vicious. Arriving on the heels of his 2020 documentary film Herb Alpert Is…, 2021’s Catch the Wind finds legendary pop trumpeter Herb Alpert continuing to put his distinctive instrumental stamp on nicely curated covers and originals. Along with his career-spanning documentary, Catch the Wind is a continuation of Alpert’s late-career resurgence that began in the 2000s with albums like 2009’s Anything Goes and 2011’s I Feel You, and which culminated in a Grammy win for 2013’s Steppin’ Out and a nomination for 2016’s Human Nature. This album is named after a members-only club that was opened in Havana in pre-Castro times, a period of unbelievable musical activity in Cuba. While bandleader Desi Arnaz became a huge hit in the States, several equally talented musicians never saw success outside their native country, and have had nothing but their music to sustain them during the Castro reign. Ry Cooder went to Cuba to record a musical documentary of these performers. The rather wordily titled “Andrew Powell and the Philharmonia Orchestra Play the Best of The Alan Parsons Project” was mainly recorded at Abbey Road, with the exception of the orchestral session for the I Robot Suite, which was done at CTS in Wembley. It was Helmut Fest at EMI Records who suggested using the Scrabble board as a way of getting around the world’s longest album title. One of the biggest difficulties I found in orchestrating these tunes is that certain kinds of “rock” themes sound like muzak if they are played by a violin or other string section: hence the solo sax on Games People Play. The One That You Love was Air Supply’s second international release and perhaps their finest all-around studio outing, spawning three top ten hits, including a number one with the heart-wrenching title track. The sheer drama of “Here I Am” and the swooping orchestration of “Sweet Dreams” complete this smash-hit trilogy, and as suggested by their name, a sense of air and space pervades other pop-tastic ballads such as “This Heart Belongs to Me” and “Keeping the Love Alive.” This is definitely the ideal second step for those looking beyond the greatest-hits package.
