The choice of Curtis Mayfield to score the blaxploitation film Super Fly was an inspired one. No other artist in popular music knew so well, and expressed through his music so naturally, the shades of gray inherent in contemporary inner-city life. Shine a Light is a 2008 British-American concert film directed by Martin Scorsese documenting The Rolling Stones’ 2006 Beacon Theatre performances on their A Bigger Bang Tour. The film also includes archive footage from the band’s career and marked the first utilisation by Scorsese of digital cinematography for his films, with it being used for the backstage sequences. The film takes its title from the song of the same name, featured on the band’s 1972 album Exile on Main St. A soundtrack album was released in April 2008 on the Universal label. This is also the last movie by Paramount Classics, as the company merged into its sister company Paramount Vantage after the movie was released. This SACD (DSD) sampler from Concord Jazz has stunning audio, so there’s that. But beyond there is also and nice mix of varying jazz tracks taken from previously released albums within their label. Favorites will certainly depend on what you like as songs range from the opening reggae infused track, “Reggae-Later” by Monty Alexander’s Ivory & Steel to “The Real Blues,” a live recording by The Ray Brown Trio to a solo piano tune called “Silent Pool” which closes out the album. When Ying Tan told me that Jacintha’s second album for Groove Note would be a collection of Johnny Mercer songs, I felt a quickening of the pulse.
