Hopes and Fears is the debut studio album by the English alternative rock band Keane. It was released on 10 May 2004 in the United Kingdom and topped the UK Albums Chart upon release. It was the second best-selling British album of 2004, behind the Scissor Sisters’ self-titled debut album, and has since been certified 9× Platinum by the BPI. Scottish whiskey-voiced vocalist Frankie Miller never made much of a splash in the States, despite, or perhaps because of, his fixation on American soul and R&B. Yanks have never been terribly appreciative of the music that originated in their homeland, which might have been a contributing factor to Miller’s marginal popularity in the U.S. He was a fairly major star in the U.K., though, big enough for EMI to remaster, repackage, and reissue his catalog (at least for the titles on their Chrysalis imprint) into this generous four-disc box. Because more than half of the 35 songs on this two-disc retrospective of Marianne Faithfull’s 1979-95 output come from her three great albums — Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances, and Strange Weather — or are previously unreleased outtakes or B-sides from them, A Perfect Stranger: The Island Anthology makes a fine primer to Faithfull’s often challenging, always mesmerizing (or would that be always challenging, often mesmerizing?) music. “Ballad of the Soldier’s Wife,” her solid contribution to 1985’s Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill, is also included, giving Faithfull’s hauntingly tragic voice the resonance and attention it demands. Elephant Mountain (1969) is the Youngbloods’ third long-player and marks their debut as a trio — featuring Jesse Colin Young (bass/guitar/vocals), Joe Bauer (drums), and Lowell “Banana” Levinger (keyboards) — after the departure of co-founder Jerry Corbitt (guitar/vocals). Although the band initially formed out of the early ’60s Northeast folk scene, by the time this set was issued they had relocated to the pastoral Northern California county of Marin.
