Roy Orbison – Lonely And Blue (1961) [1995, MasterSound Remastered]

Roy Orbison - Lonely And Blue (1961) [1995, MasterSound Remastered]

Time and familiarity — through multiple reissues — may have muted the seeming significance of some of what’s here, but in 1960 Sings Lonely and Blue was not only a breakthrough for Roy Orbison as his debut LP, but also for rock & roll. Up to that point, apart from Elvis Presley — who was in a class by himself — few white rock & rollers had even tried to make as bold a use of the LP as what we hear on this record. By 1977 Journey had reached a creative crossroads, with three underwhelming studio albums under their belt and little to show in the way of commercial success. At the prodding of manager Herbie Herbert, who felt a major shakeup was needed in order to reignite their spark, the band was convinced to audition and eventually recruit the services of former Alien Project vocalist Steve Perry. Lou Reed - The Sire Years: Complete Albums Box (2015) [10CD, Box Set]

From 1972 to 1986, Lou Reed recorded for the RCA and Arista labels, where he made several strong solo albums as well as a few creative missteps, and while he became one of rock’s most respected songwriters, both labels seemed unsure of how to present Reed’s work to the public. The Moody Blues classic 1967 album Days Of Future Passed is regarded as one of the foundation stones of the progressive rock genre. In 2017, the band headed out on the album’s 50th Anniversary Tour including the wonderful show captured at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts in Toronto accompanied by a full orchestra. The concert begins with the band by themselves performing a selection of classic Moody Blues tracks before they are joined by the orchestra to perform Days Of Future Passed in its entirety plus a couple of fantastic encore tracks. The Mills Brothers – The Mills Brothers Chronological Vol.1 (1999)

The Mills Brothers - The Mills Brothers Chronological Vol.1 (1999)

The English JSP label, on six CD’s, has reissued in chronological order all of the Mills Brothers recordings from the 1931-39 period. Although they became a best-selling middle-of-the-road pop vocal group in the 1940’s, the Mills Brothers were most notable during their first decade for their uncanny ability to imitate instruments, particularly trumpet, trombone, and bass. Johnny Winter - Johnny Winter And (1970) [2000, DCC, Remastered]

After two late-’60s albums on Columbia, Johnny Winter hit his stride in 1970 working with Rick Derringer and the McCoys, now recruited as his sidemen and collaborators (and proving with just about every note here how far they’d gotten past “Hang on Sloopy”). James Taylor – JT (1977) [1994, MasterSound Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

James Taylor - JT (1977) [1994, MasterSound Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

On his last couple of Warner Bros albums, Gorilla and In the Pocket, James Taylor seemed to be converting himself from the shrinking violet, too-sensitive-to-live “rainy day man” of his early records into a mainstream, easy listening crooner with a sunny outlook. JT, his debut album for Columbia, was something of a defense of this conversion. Continue reading “James Taylor – JT (1977) [1994, MasterSound Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]”

Roy Orbison – The Soul Of Rock And Roll (2008) [4CD Box Set]

Roy Orbison - The Soul Of Rock And Roll (2008) [4CD Box Set]

In 1988, Columbia Records released a four-disc Roy Orbison retrospective called The Legendary Roy Orbison. It contained 74 tracks. It was a great package except for one thing: it sounded terrible, as the mastering techniques in the first days of the CD were not what they are now. The Soul of Rock and Roll, issued by Sony Legacy in 2008, is an enormous improvement in the sonic arena, just for starters. This four-disc collection contains 107 tracks (33 more than the previous box) with selections from all the labels Orbison recorded for.
