Pianist/vocalist Patricia Barber is the Alanis Morissette of the jazz world. Her serpentine, poetic songs teeter between deftly witty and awkwardly Latinate. Each album is more ambitious than the last, taking her deeper into avant-garde territory both lyrically and instrumentally. Joe Cocker’s debut album holds up extraordinarily well across four decades, the singer’s performance bolstered by some very sharp playing, not only by his established sideman/collaborator Chris Stainton, but also some top-notch session musicians, among them drummer Clem Cattini, Steve Winwood on organ, and guitarists Jimmy Page and Albert Lee, all sitting in. Drawing on rock, salsa, and jazz, Santana recorded one imaginative, unpredictable gem after another during the 1970s. But Caravanserai is daring even by Santana’s high standards. The scope, balance, and reach of Ezrin’s explosive production comes to the fore. If Disraeli Gears was the album where Cream came into their own, its successor, Wheels of Fire, finds the trio in full fight, capturing every side of their multi-faceted personality, even hinting at the internal pressures that soon would tear the band asunder. A dense, unwieldy double album split into an LP of new studio material and an LP of live material, it’s sprawling and scattered, at once awesome in its achievement and maddening in how it falls just short of greatness. Recorded by the BBC on March 9, 1972, this previously difficult to find live show captures the classic Mark ll version of Deep Purple in all their incendiary power. This performance — basically the entirety of the then just released Machine Head minus “Pictures of Home” — is easily as good, and at times better than, Made in Japan, recorded five months later. The Faces’ third album, A Nod Is as Good as a Wink…to a Blind Horse, finally gave the group their long-awaited hit single in “Stay with Me,” helping send the album into the Billboard Top Ten, which is certainly a testament to both the song and the album, but it’s hard to separate its success from that of Rod Stewart’s sudden solo stardom. In the mere months that separated Long Player and A Nod, Rod had a phenomenal hit with “Maggie May” and Every Picture Tells a Story, his third solo album Continue reading “Faces – A Nod Is As Good As A Wink…To A Blind Horse… (1971) [2005, Audio Fidelity Remastered]”

Peter Green is the founder of Fleetwood Mac and his songs have been recorded, covered, and re-interpreted for the past 40 years. As BB King has said, “Peter Green is the only man who ever made me sweat.” Artists such as Ian Anderson, Rory Gallagher, Savoy Brown, Harvey Mandel and others share their interpretations of some of Peter’s greatest songs (Oh Well, Black Magic Women, Albatross, Supernatural and more), making this 15 song collection a must have. Damn the Torpedoes wasn’t simply a culmination of Tom Petty’s art; it happened to be a huge success, enabling him to call the shots on its successor, Hard Promises. Infamously, he used his first album as a star to challenge the record industry’s practice of charging more for A-list artists, demanding that Hard Promises should be listed for less than most records by an artist of his stature Continue reading “Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers – Hard Promises (1981) [1992, MFSL Remastered]”

When he recorded this album, his lone date as a leader, trumpeter Tommy Turrentine (who was a member of Max Roach’s group along with his brother, the soon-to-be famous tenor Stanley Turrentine) seemed to have a potentially great future.
