Bruce Springsteen’s make-or-break third album represented a sonic leap from his first two, which had been made for modest sums at a suburban studio; Born to Run was cut on a superstar budget, mostly at the Record Plant in New York. Springsteen’s backup band had changed, with his two virtuoso players, keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Vini Lopez, replaced by the professional but less flashy Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg Continue reading “Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run (1975) [1994, Sony MasterSound, 24-Karat Gold Disc Remastered]”

Dave Brubeck’s defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move — Brubeck’s record company wasn’t keen on releasing such an arty project Continue reading “The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Time Out (1959) [1992, MasterSound Remastered]”

Carole King brought the fledgling singer/songwriter phenomenon to the masses with Tapestry, one of the most successful albums in pop music history. A remarkably expressive and intimate record, it’s a work of consummate craftsmanship. Always a superior pop composer, King reaches even greater heights as a performer; new songs like the hits “It’s Too Late” and “I Feel the Earth Move” rank solidly with past glories Continue reading “Carole king – Tapestry (1971) [1994, MasterSound Remastered]”

Croce’s debut ABC album was also his commercial breakthrough, topping the charts for five weeks, largely due to the comic, up-tempo title tune, a story song about competing pool hustlers, although Croce also reached the Top 20 with the change-of-pace ballad “Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels).” Just after his death, ABC issued the track “Time in a Bottle,” and a newly ironic message propelled it to number one. Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton was Eric Clapton’s first fully realized album as a blues guitarist — more than that, it was a seminal blues album of the 1960s, perhaps the best British blues album ever cut, and the best LP ever recorded by John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Standing midway between Clapton’s stint with the Yardbirds and the formation of Cream, this album featured the new guitar hero on a series of stripped-down blues standards, Mayall pieces, and one Mayall/Clapton composition Continue reading “John Mayall With Eric Clapton – Blues Breakers (1966) [2009, Audio Fidelity Remastered]”

Countdown to Extinction is the fifth studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth, released on July 14, 1992 through Capitol Records. It was the group’s second studio release to feature the “classic” lineup of Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson and Nick Menza, with all of them contributing to songwriting on the album. Rickie Lee Jones is the debut album of singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones. After arriving in California in the mid-1970s, Jones started taking songwriting more seriously, and by 1977 had met singer-songwriters Chuck E. Weiss and Tom Waits (Jones consequently became romantically involved with Waits). Continue reading “Rickie Lee Jones – Rickie Lee Jones (1979) {1983, MFSL Remastered, CD-Format + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip}”

While Richard Thompson’s devotees will tell you the man is a triple-threat genius — passionate vocalist, compelling songwriter, and sterling guitarist — even his most loyal supporters will concede that the dour nature of his songs and the no-frills production of many of his albums make the bulk of his catalog tough sledding for the uninitiated. Given this, 1991’s Rumor and Sigh is arguably the best album for those wanting to sample Thompson’s work for the first time. 1982 will forever be known as the year that the punks got class — or at least when Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello, rivals for the title of Britain’s reigning Angry Young Man — decided that they were not just rockers, but really songwriters in the Tin Pan Alley tradition. (Graham Parker, fellow angry Brit, sat this battle out, choosing to work with Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas instead.) Both had been genre-hopping prior to 1982, but Jackson’s Night and Day and Costello’s Imperial Bedroom announced to the world that both were “serious songwriters,” standing far apart from the clamoring punkers and silly new wavers. With Breakfast in America, Supertramp had a genuine blockbuster hit, topping the charts for four weeks in the U.S. and selling millions of copies worldwide; by the 1990s, the album had sold over 18 million units across the world. Although their previous records had some popular success, they never even hinted at the massive sales of Breakfast in America. Then again, Supertramp’s earlier records weren’t as pop-oriented as Breakfast. The majority of the album consisted of tightly written, catchy, well-constructed pop songs, like the hits “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and “Goodbye Stranger.” Supertramp still had a tendency to indulge themselves occasionally, but Breakfast in America had very few weak moments. It was clearly their high-water mark. Continue reading “Supertramp – Breakfast In America (1979) {2018, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip}”
