Though he never really slowed down at any point, Neil Young stayed on an especially prolific streak as the 2010s bled into the 2020s. In addition to a steady rollout of archival material, official versions of long-bootlegged shows, and other miscellanea, Neil has produced albums of entirely new material at a rate unmatched by most artists in his age bracket who have been at it for as long as he has. Neil Young + Promise Of The Real – Noise & Flowers (2022)

Neil Young + Promise Of The Real - Noise & Flowers (2022)

Neil Young embarked on a 2019 European tour with Promise of the Real only two weeks after the passing of Elliot Roberts, his life-long friend and manager. Young viewed this tour as a living tribute to Roberts, claiming in the liner notes to Noise & Flowers — a 2022 document of the 2019 trek — that “Playing in his memory (made it) one of the most special tours ever. Neil Young + Promise Of The Real announce a new live album, Noise & Flowers, that captures the group in all their glory on their 2019 European tour. The release will be accompanied by a similarly titled concert film that’s included in the album’s 2xLP+CD Deluxe Edition. Noise & Flowers documents a 9-date tour that began just two weeks after Young’s lifetime friend and manager of more than 50 years, Elliot Roberts, passed away at age 76. Performing alongside a photograph of Roberts taped to his road case, Young approached each show as a celebratory memorial service to honor his late friend. It’s a trek the legendary singer/songwriter describes as “wondrous.” “Playing in his memory [made it] one of the most special tours ever,” Young says in the album’s liner notes. Recorded in San Francisco around the turn of themillennium, Toast features Young’s legendary musicalcollaborators Crazy Horse at a ragged and thundering apex. The long anticipated 7-song album includes differentversions of 4 songs that were included on “Are YouPassionate” but the other 3 songs are previously unreleased (“Timberline”,“Gateway of Love” and “Standing In The Light Of Love”). A fan favorite bootleg that is usually called “Live at The Bottom Line”. A surprise solo acoustic performance following a Ry Cooder show on May 16, 1974. Notably features songs that would be included on “On The Beach”. The album title comes from Neil introducing the opening song with that title; a song that later became “Push It Over The End”. Backed only by co-producer Danny Kortchmar on guitar and Steve Jordan on drums, with all three playing synthesizers, Neil Young turns in an album that attempts to mix the raunchy rock thrust of his Crazy Horse-style music with contemporary trends in pop, especially the tendency to turn the drums way up in the mix. One of the great Neil Young stories concerns a visit to Young’s ranch by Graham Nash. Young ushered his friend into a rowboat, as he wanted to listen to his new album Harvest while lazing about on the lake. As it roared out of twin speakers emanating from the house and barn, producer Elliot Mazer asked Young how the playback sounded, Young hollered back “More Barn!” It’s hard not to think of this tale when faced with Barn Continue reading “Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Barn (2021) [Official Digital Release] [CD-Quality + Hi-Res]”

When it was released, Trans was Neil Young’s most baffling album. He had employed a vocoder to synthesize his voice on five of the album’s nine tracks, resulting in disembodied singing, the lyrics nearly impossible to decipher without the lyric sheet. And even when you read the words, “Computer Age,” “We R in Control,” “Transformer Man,” “Computer Cowboy,” and “Sample and Hold” seemed like a vague mishmash of high-tech jargon. Neil Young had just released his third solo album After the Gold Rush a few months before he played Carnegie Hall in December of 1970, where he offered up a new set of introspective songs that were relatively toned down when compared to the stomping full-band jamming of 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. This would just be the beginning of a run of classic albums that continued throughout the ’70s, and both sides of Young’s musical personality — the hushed and patient songwriter side, and the side that tended toward rugged rock — were integral to how that peerless run played out. Neil Young – Young Shakespeare (2021)

Neil Young - Young Shakespeare (2021)

Just two months after the release of his seminal album After The Gold Rush, Neil Young played a solo show at The Shakespeare Theater, Stratford, CT on January 22 1971. The show was filmed and recorded, and the concert shown on German TV later in 1971. In 2020, while Neil and his team were reviewing his Archive for future projects, Neil re-visited the 16mm film and audio recording of this show that had been preserved in the Archive for almost 50 years. Piecing together the tapes and footage, Neil realized that he had the full concert – the film of which is the earliest live footage of Neil performing that is known to exist. Capturing a performance given at the Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut just three days after the celebrated concert documented on Live at Massey Hall 1971 — a show popular for years among bootleggers but released officially as part of Neil Young’s Archives Performance Series in March 2007 — Young Shakespeare is very similar in tone and feel to its cousin.
