Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – Raise The Roof (2021) [Deluxe Edition]

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raise The Roof (2021) [Deluxe Edition]

Raising Sand, the first collaborative effort between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, seemed to come from out of the blue in 2007. The pairing of golden rock god and bluegrass troubadour was as unexpected as the album’s subdued, nuanced Americana, a sound that existed at the crossroads of the past and the present. It seemed like lightning in a bottle, the kind of magic that couldn’t be reproduced, and the subsequent decade or so suggested that suspicion might be true. Circus – Circus (1976) [2022, Japanese Remastered, SHM-CD]

Circus - Circus (1976) [2022, Japanese Remastered, SHM-CD]

Coming from the NW Switzerland on the language border between the Alemanics and the Romands, this unusual quartet of musicians has a strange line-up. Hauser is one of the better percussionists (still playing but in jazz bands nowadays), and bassist Cerletti (the only non-Alemanic in the band) is certainly excellent plays also acoustic guitar. The other two, Fri and Grieder, share the wind instruments with the vocals. That’s it! No KB and almost no el. guitars, at least on the first two albums. Big Big Train – Welcome To The Planet (2022)

Big Big Train - Welcome To The Planet (2022)

Welcome To The Planet is the next studio album by Big Big Train and comes six months after the release of the band’s critically acclaimed top 40 album Common Ground. As With Common Ground, Welcome To The Planet sees Big Big Train retain their progressive roots but also take influence from all spheres of music. The album’s opener ‘Made From Sunshine’, co-written by guitarist Dave Foster and singer David Longdon, has guitar lines redolent of Johnny Marr and vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Finn Brothers/Crowded House, with violinist Clare Lindley sharing lead vocals with Longdon. Various Artists - Good As Gold (Artefacts Of The Apple Era 1967-1975) (2021) [5CD Set]

Five CD set. Established in 1967 at the height of their powers, The Beatles’ Apple operation saw the group embrace and encourage a wealth of contemporary musical talent, offering studio time and demo facilities alongside recording and publishing contracts. This unique opportunity attracted artists and songwriters from across the musical spectrum, and Good As Gold presents a snapshot of that talent, spanning the years 1967 to 1975. From the psychedelic tinged sounds of the mid-late 1960s onwards, the label matured and evolved alongside it’s audience and remains as compelling today as it did during those halcyon days. Robert Palmer – Riptide (1985) [2021, Japanese Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered]

Robert Palmer - Riptide (1985) [2021, Japanese Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered]

Coming on the heels of the massive success of the Power Station, Riptide packages Robert Palmer’s voice and suave personality into a commercial series of mostly rocking songs that seem custom-tailored to be chart hits. The Power Station connection threatens to overpower Palmer’s usually more eclectic musical interest, but with that band’s producer/member Bernard Edwards handling production duties and members Andy Taylor and Tony Thompson contributing as well, stylistic similarities were inevitable. Robert Palmer - Some People Can Do What They Like (1976) [2021, Japanese Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered]

Robert Palmer’s third album is a blue-eyed soul disc that sits comfortably alongside Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley and Pressure Drop. This time, Palmer drops the orchestrations that tarted up portions of Pressure Drop in favor of a stripped-down yet stylish sound that shows off his ability to create a romantic, soulful mood. Highlights include “One Last Look,” a lush breakup ballad that features a catchy, harmony-drenched chorus, and “Keep in Touch,” a romantic tune that highlights Palmer’s vocal style at its seductive height over a jazzy yet mellow melody built on a complex background vocal arrangement. Gerry And The Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone (The EMI Years 1963-1966) (2008) [4CD-Set]

Gerry & the Pacemakers are fated to eternal comparisons to the Beatles, their onetime Merseybeat rivals who rapidly eclipsed the quartet in popularity and accomplishment, leaving them as something of a pop culture punchline. In the wake of the Beatles, it was hard to look back at Gerry Marsden and his irrepressibly cheerful music and think it was in the same league as the Fab Four, or any of the British Invasion groups that followed.
