Creedence Clearwater Revival – Green River (1969) [1993, DCC Remastered, 24 Karat Gold]

If anything, CCR’s third album Green River represents the full flower of their classic sound initially essayed on its predecessor, Bayou Country. One of the differences between the two albums is that Green River is tighter, with none of the five-minute-plus jams that filled out both their debut and Bayou Country, but the true key to its success is a peak in John Fogerty’s creativity. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Bayou Country (1968) [1993, DCC Remastered, 24 Karat Gold CD]

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bayou Country (1968) [1993, DCC Remastered, 24 Karat Gold CD]

Opening slowly with the dark, swampy “Born on the Bayou,” Bayou Country reveals an assured Creedence Clearwater Revival, a band that has found its voice between their first and second album. It’s not just that “Born on the Bayou” announces that CCR has discovered its sound — it reveals the extent of John Fogerty’s myth-making. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Willy And The Poor Boys (1969) [1994, DCC Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Willy And The Poor Boys (1969) [1994, DCC Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

Make no mistake, Willy & the Poor Boys is a fun record, perhaps the breeziest album CCR ever made. Apart from the eerie minor-key closer “Effigy” (one of John Fogerty’s most haunting numbers), there is little of the doom that colored Green River. Fogerty’s rage remains, blazing to the forefront on “Fortunate Son,” a working-class protest song that cuts harder than any of the explicit Vietnam protest songs of the era, which is one of the reasons that it hasn’t aged where its peers have. Also, there’s that unbridled vocal from Fogerty and the ferocious playing on CCR, which both sound fresh as they did upon release. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Pendulum (1970) [1996, DCC Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Pendulum (1970) [1996, DCC Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

During 1969 and 1970, CCR was dismissed by hipsters as a bubblegum pop band and the sniping had grown intolerable, at least to John Fogerty, who designed Pendulum as a rebuke to critics. He spent time polishing the production, bringing in keyboards, horns, even a vocal choir. His songs became self-consciously serious and tighter, working with the aesthetic of the rock underground Continue reading “Creedence Clearwater Revival – Pendulum (1970) [1996, DCC Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]”

Blood, Sweat And Tears – The Complete Columbia Singles (2014) [2CD]

Blood, Sweat And Tears - The Complete Columbia Singles (2014) [2CD]

Blood, Sweat & Tears are no strangers to oldies radio but even so, they only have a handful singles in constant rotation: “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” “Spinning Wheel,” “And When I Die,” and maybe “Hi-De-Ho.” “You’re the One,” a Top 10 Adult Contemporary single from 1976, is rarely heard and that’s just one of many songs released on the A- and B-sides of singles released between 1968 and 1976, all of which are compiled on Real Gone’s 2014 double-disc set The Complete Columbia Singles. Blood, Sweat & Tears – New Blood / No Sweat / More Than Ever (2012) [Remastered, 2CD]

Blood, Sweat & Tears - New Blood / No Sweat / More Than Ever (2012) [Remastered, 2CD]

From their beginnings as an attempt at bold jazz-rock fusion in 1967 through a run as a high-powered R&B/soul-rock singles act with singer David Clayton-Thomas two years later, Blood, Sweat & Tears were always a kind of fascinating experiment, and a commercially successful one at that. The first album from the Clayton-Thomas-fronted band appeared in 1969, spawned four high chart hits, won a Grammy as Album of the Year, and went on to sell some three million units. Simply Red are a pop institution, at least in areas of the world that are not the United States, and like all institutions, they’re in need of a monument to their longevity. Song Book 1985-2010 is that monument, a four-disc box set that tells their story, concentrating on their hits but also adding a disc of new recordings where they revisit deep cuts from their catalog, refashioning them so they sound similar to latter-day Simply Red. Various Artists – Waiting To Exhale (Original Soundtrack Album) [1995]

Various Artists - Waiting To Exhale (Original Soundtrack Album) [1995]

Mega-producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds assembled quite a cast for this critically acclaimed soundtrack (and movie). The phenomenal Whitney Houston leads a mostly all-star cast of artists. Houston is featured on three of the 16 selections including the “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” which crested at the number spot on the Billboard R&B charts for eight consecutive weeks and one week at number one on the pop charts. Various Artists – The Woman In Red (Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1984)

Various Artists - The Woman In Red (Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1984)

Stevie Wonder’s career in the 1980s was a source of frustration to the fans he had earned in the ’60s and ’70s. In 1982, there were a few new songs on a greatest-hits album and a duet with Paul McCartney. Then came this soundtrack to a Gene Wilder comedy that was simultaneously more of a pop vocal album than most soundtracks and yet less than a full-fledged Wonder record.
