The Pirates — guitarist Mick Green, bassist Johnny Spence, and drummer Frank Farley — cut their teeth in the mid-’60s as the backing band for British rock belter Johnny Kidd, but when Kidd died in an auto accident in 1966, their career went into a tailspin and they broke up a few years later. This one-off collaboration between the Cure’s Robert Smith and Siouxsie & the Banshees’ Steven Severin resulted in an eccentric, and at times incompatible, mix of psychedelic sounds wrapped around alternative ’80s pop. Writers Smith and Severin’s more eccentric tendencies are as likely to evoke pictures of a carnival as a funereal march, but the backbone rests largely on tightly constructed tunes with occasional forays into the experimental. For his album, Wright assembled some of the backing musicians who had been accompanying Pink Floyd for years, in particular reed player Mel Collins and guitarist Snowy White. The contemporary album celebrates the holiday season while honoring classic jazz and pop records of the 1950s. Today James releases the first single, “My Favorite Things,” a joyful rendition of the John Coltrane staple. A 13 date tour to support the album will launch at SF Jazz in San Francisco on November 27th and conclude at New York’s City Winery on December 14th. Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga recorded Love for Sale, their second duet album, with the knowledge that it was likely the last from Bennett. Back in 2016, two years before the sessions for Love for Sale started, Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. By the time Love for Sale was released in 2021, he’d officially retired from live performances. The Gaga collaboration wasn’t billed as Bennett’s final album, but given his health and advanced age (he turned 95 in 2021), Love for Sale is more likely than not a farewell.
