Adele – 30 (2021) [Japanese Edition]

Adele - 30 (2021) [Japanese Edition]

Since 2008, Adele has allowed listeners to peek into her world, carrying them through the major stages of her life as a shoulder to cry on and a relatable presence. With her fourth set, 30, she grants more access than ever before, detailing one of her most painful seasons with poise and grace. Charting the aftermath of her 2019 divorce, 30 is not a fiery breakup album. Rather, focusing on acceptance, growth, and owning her mistakes, she’s created a time capsule for her son, Angelo, to understand what his mother was going through at this pivotal time. Dennis DeYoung - 26 East Vol. 2 (2021) [Japanese Edition]

Dennis DeYoung is back with the second volume of his fond farewell to recorded music, “26 East, Vol. 2.” As with the preceding volume, “26 East, Vol. 2” once again hints strongly at DeYoung’s legendary rock roots with Styx. A fitting goodbye and a final signature on an outstanding body of work. Continue reading “Dennis DeYoung – 26 East Vol. 2 (2021) [Japanese Edition]”

The Iveys – Maybe Tomorrow (1969) [1992, Remastered]

The Iveys - Maybe Tomorrow (1969) [1992, Remastered]

The story is well-known: south Wales pop group, the Iveys, are discovered by the Beatles’ aide-de-camp Mal Evans, who not only signs them to Apple Records but produces their first sessions. Their first single, the glorious Bee Gees-like ballad “Maybe Tomorrow,” is released in November 1968, yet it unaccountably stiffs. Disheartened, Apple shelves the planned U.S./U.K. release of the Iveys’ debut album, though it does eventually sneak out in Japan and Germany. The Doobie Brothers – Liberté (2021)

The Doobie Brothers - Liberté (2021)

Out on the road in the 2020s, the Doobie Brothers feature Michael McDonald, but when it comes time for the group to cut a record, the band whittles down to the trio of Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, and John McFee. Naturally, this means Liberté — the Doobies’ first album of new original material since 2010’s World Gone Crazy — sounds closer to a refurbished version of Toulouse Street or The Captain and Me than Takin’ It to the Streets; there’s no funky soft rock or smooth blue-eyed soul, just a lot of straight-ahead rock & roll. Santana – Blessings And Miracles (2021)

Santana - Blessings And Miracles (2021)

Blessings and Miracles belongs to the Supernatural lineage, an album where Santana often cedes the spotlight to a diverse array of guest stars. What sounded fresh in 1999 now sounds slightly formulaic in 2021, especially since Santana reunite with Rob Thomas, the Matchbox Twenty singer who helped turn Supernatural’s “Smooth” into an international hit back in the days of Y2K. Duran Duran – Future Past (2021) [Deluxe Edition]

Duran Duran - Future Past (2021) [Deluxe Edition]

Future Past is perhaps the quintessential title for Duran Duran in 2021, when the veteran New Romantics trade in their legacy while keeping their focus directly on the future. Occasionally, the gilded synthesized surfaces of Future Past recall the futurism of New Wave, but Duran Duran take pains to not re-create the past by inviting a fresh set of collaborators into the studio. Now serving up a third installment of gut-busting, freewheeling, acid-soaked hard rock, I’m a Freak Baby is the gift that keeps on giving. U.K. archivists Grapefruit Records first launched the series in 2016, scooping the cream off the top of England’s heaping barrel of late-1960s/early-’70s sludge rock, only to uncover yet more layers on their 2019 follow-up, I’m a Freak 2 Baby. Various Artists - New Moon's In The Sky (The British Progressive Pop Sounds Of 1970) (2019) [3CD]

Like the late ’60s that had just come to a shuddering close, 1970 was a confusing time for music in the U.K. (and everywhere else too). Psychedelia was fading out, bubblegum was on its last bounce, prog was getting fired up, and bands were getting heavier, moving to the country, and searching for mellow vibes. An expansive overview of the year would make for some very eclectic listening; the Grapefruit label chose to narrow the scope down just a bit on their three-disc collection New Moon’s in the Sky: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1970.
