Johnny Winter – Johnny Winter And (1970) [2000, DCC, Remastered]

Johnny Winter - Johnny Winter And (1970) [2000, DCC, Remastered]

After two late-’60s albums on Columbia, Johnny Winter hit his stride in 1970 working with Rick Derringer and the McCoys, now recruited as his sidemen and collaborators (and proving with just about every note here how far they’d gotten past “Hang on Sloopy”). James Taylor – JT (1977) [1994, MasterSound Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

James Taylor - JT (1977) [1994, MasterSound Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

On his last couple of Warner Bros albums, Gorilla and In the Pocket, James Taylor seemed to be converting himself from the shrinking violet, too-sensitive-to-live “rainy day man” of his early records into a mainstream, easy listening crooner with a sunny outlook. JT, his debut album for Columbia, was something of a defense of this conversion. Continue reading “James Taylor – JT (1977) [1994, MasterSound Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]”

Roy Orbison – The Soul Of Rock And Roll (2008) [4CD Box Set]

Roy Orbison - The Soul Of Rock And Roll (2008) [4CD Box Set]

In 1988, Columbia Records released a four-disc Roy Orbison retrospective called The Legendary Roy Orbison. It contained 74 tracks. It was a great package except for one thing: it sounded terrible, as the mastering techniques in the first days of the CD were not what they are now. The Soul of Rock and Roll, issued by Sony Legacy in 2008, is an enormous improvement in the sonic arena, just for starters. This four-disc collection contains 107 tracks (33 more than the previous box) with selections from all the labels Orbison recorded for. Jeff Lynne’s ELO – Wembley Or Bust (2017) [CD + DVD]

Jeff Lynne's ELO - Wembley Or Bust (2017) [CD + DVD]

Jeff Lynne revived Electric Light Orchestra in 2015 — due to legal reasons, they were now called Jeff Lynne’s ELO — releasing a comeback album called Alone in the Universe and steadily mounting a return to the road. Several dates happened in 2016, but the tour reached its apex in June 2017, when the group played in front of 60,000 people at London’s Wembley Stadium. Released five months after that June 24 gig, Wembley or Bust — which was accompanied by a concert film — features the entirety of the gig, and if it’s not heard too closely, it could sometimes be mistaken for an ELO greatest-hits album. The Lightning Seeds – The Very Best Of The Lightning Seeds (2006)

The Lightning Seeds - The Very Best Of The Lightning Seeds (2006)

This version of the Lightning Seeds’ greatest hits arrived in the summer of 2006, replacing both The Life of Riley from 2003 and Like You Do…Best of the Lightning Seeds from 1997. What do you put on a collection of Lightning Seeds hits? When one looks at their list of hit singles, it is not that impressive: only 13 hits, only one of which reached the Top Ten, and that was one of their lesser-remembered tracks, “You Showed Me.” Continue reading “The Lightning Seeds – The Very Best Of The Lightning Seeds (2006)”

Lou Reed – The RCA & Arista Album Collection (2016) [17CD Box Set]

Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection (2016) [17CD Box Set]

In 1972, Lou Reed was a minor cult hero to a handful of rock critics and left-of-center music fans who championed his former band, the Velvet Underground, but he was unknown to the mainstream music audience. By 1986, Reed was a rock & roll icon, widely hailed as a master songwriter and one of the founding fathers of punk, glam, noise rock, and any number of other vital rock subgenres; he even scored a few hits along the way. The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Time Out (1959) [1992, MasterSound Remastered]

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out (1959) [1992, MasterSound Remastered]

Dave Brubeck’s defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move — Brubeck’s record company wasn’t keen on releasing such an arty project Continue reading “The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Time Out (1959) [1992, MasterSound Remastered]”

A remarkably expressive and intimate record, it’s a work of consummate craftsmanship. Always a superior pop composer, King reaches even greater heights as a performer; new songs like the hits “It’s Too Late” and “I Feel the Earth Move” rank solidly with past glories Continue reading “Carole king – Tapestry (1971) [1994, MasterSound Remastered]”
