John Denver - A Song's Best Friend: The Very Best Of (2004)

Coinciding with the 35th anniversary of Denver’s first album release on RCA, this two-disc, 25-track overview of the country-pop singer’s storied career is the most concise and nuanced yet. Digitally remastered from the original master tapes, road-trip classics like “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Rocky Mountain High,” and “Back Home Again” Continue reading “John Denver – A Song’s Best Friend: The Very Best Of (2004)”

Few rock & roll records rock as hard or with as much originality as the Pretenders’ eponymous debut album. A sleek, stylish fusion of Stonesy rock & roll, new wave pop, and pure punk aggression, Pretenders is teeming with sharp hooks and a viciously cool attitude. Carly Simon’s best album, No Secrets was also her commercial breakthrough, topping the charts and going gold, along with its leadoff single, “You’re So Vain.” That song set the album’s saucy tone, with its air of sexually frank autobiography (“You had me several years ago/When I was still quite naïve”) and its reflections on the jet-set lifestyle. Steppenwolf entered the studio for their recording debut with a lot of confidence — based on a heavy rehearsal schedule before they ever got signed — and it shows on this album, a surprisingly strong debut album from a tight hard rock outfit who was obviously searching for a hook to hang their sound on. Little Richard - King of Rock and Roll: The Complete Reprise Recordings (2004) [3CD-Set]

Little Richard was not the only original rock & roller to attempt a comeback in the late ’60s and early ’70s, but he may have been the one to take the greatest musical risks. Fats Domino merely updated his sound (albeit in a charming fashion), Jerry Lee Lewis refashioned himself as a hardcore country singer, and Chuck Berry pandered with “My Ding-A-Ling,” but Little Richard pushed himself on his three albums for Reprise, all of which were collected — along with his contributions to Quincy Jones’ 1972 Dollar$ soundtrack album, non-LP singles, session outtakes, and a complete unreleased Continue reading “Little Richard – King of Rock and Roll: The Complete Reprise Recordings (2004) [3CD-Set]”

This session comes from close to the end of the line (1959) in the erstwhile swinging company of Barney Kessel on guitar, Ben Webster on tenor, and naysayers will be quick to point out that Lady Day wasn’t in peak form here. But Billie Holiday with some of the platinum chipped off the pipes is still way better than a buncha finger-snappin’ wannabes anyday. With the Vietnam War winding down, Joan Baez, who had devoted one side of her last album to her trip to Hanoi, delivered the kind of commercial album A&M Records must have wanted when it signed her three years earlier. But she did it on her own terms, putting together a session band of contemporary jazz veterans like Larry Carlton, Wilton Felder, and Joe Sample, and mixing a wise selection from the work of current singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and John Prine with pop covers of Stevie Wonder and the Allman Brothers Band, and an unusually high complement of her own writing. Having made several changes in their business and musical efforts in 1972, Grand Funk Railroad made even more extensive ones in 1973, beginning with their name, which was officially truncated to “Grand Funk.” And keyboardist Craig Frost, credited as a sideman on Phoenix, the previous album, was now a full-fledged bandmember, filling out the musical arrangements. David Bowie has never been shy about acknowledging his influences, and since the boho decadence and sexual ambiguity of the Velvet Underground’s music had a major impact on Bowie’s work, it was only fitting that as Ziggy Stardust mania was reaching its peak, Bowie would offer Lou Reed some much needed help with his career, which was stuck in neutral after his first solo album came and went. Musically, Reed’s work didn’t have too much in common with the sonic bombast of the glam scene Continue reading “Lou Reed – Transformer (1972) {1982, Non-Remastered}”
