Instead of trying to compete with a newer, fashion-conscious pop marketplace, Linda Ronstadt removed herself from the rat race, recording an album of traditional pop standards with Nelson Riddle. Ronstadt’s voice isn’t always showcased to a fine effect on these songs, but the record is an interesting change of pace. And it would have been more interesting if she hadn’t repeated its formula on her next two records. This album was the group’s magnum opus in the perception of many onlookers and fans, and it still plays well, though its flaws are more evident than they were at the time. The “Song of Scheherazade,” really a suite for the group supported by the London Symphony Orchestra and a chorus, started with guitarist-composer Michael Dunford, who had a personal fascination with the medieval literary work Tales of 1,001 Arabian Nights Continue reading “Renaissance – Scheherazade And Other Stories (1975) [1983, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

After both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley left Miles Davis’ quintet, he was caught in the web of seeking suitable replacements. It was a period of trial and error for him that nonetheless yielded some legendary recordings (Sketches of Spain, for one). One of those is Someday My Prince Will Come. The lineup is Davis, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and alternating drummers Jimmy Cobb and Philly Jo Jones. Live At Alice Tully Hall – January 27, 1973 – 2nd Show captures Lou Reed’s New York City live debut as a solo artist, at the Lincoln Center venue during his Transformer tour. He was backed by The Tots, a tight, funky, twin-guitar combo whose gritty bar-band approach offered an energized accompaniment to Reed’s material, whether that was the Velvets (“Heroin,” “Sweet Jane”) or songs from his first two solo albums, Walk On The Wild Side and Vicious. Arriving on the heels of his 2020 documentary film Herb Alpert Is…, 2021’s Catch the Wind finds legendary pop trumpeter Herb Alpert continuing to put his distinctive instrumental stamp on nicely curated covers and originals. Along with his career-spanning documentary, Catch the Wind is a continuation of Alpert’s late-career resurgence that began in the 2000s with albums like 2009’s Anything Goes and 2011’s I Feel You, and which culminated in a Grammy win for 2013’s Steppin’ Out and a nomination for 2016’s Human Nature. This album is named after a members-only club that was opened in Havana in pre-Castro times, a period of unbelievable musical activity in Cuba. While bandleader Desi Arnaz became a huge hit in the States, several equally talented musicians never saw success outside their native country, and have had nothing but their music to sustain them during the Castro reign. Ry Cooder went to Cuba to record a musical documentary of these performers. The rather wordily titled “Andrew Powell and the Philharmonia Orchestra Play the Best of The Alan Parsons Project” was mainly recorded at Abbey Road, with the exception of the orchestral session for the I Robot Suite, which was done at CTS in Wembley. It was Helmut Fest at EMI Records who suggested using the Scrabble board as a way of getting around the world’s longest album title. One of the biggest difficulties I found in orchestrating these tunes is that certain kinds of “rock” themes sound like muzak if they are played by a violin or other string section: hence the solo sax on Games People Play.
