Perhaps John Denver’s worst-selling album, Whose Garden Was This, is largely a record of cover songs, starting with the Tom Paxton-penned environmentalist anthem that is the title track, and including Denver versions of such songs as the Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Mr. Bojangles,” The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Golden Slumbers.” Denver’s own contributions included the awkward “I Wish I Could Have Been There (Woodstock).” Though Denver tried in a sleeve note to weave all this into a theme, something about “all the things that change as we grow older.” In fact, Whose Garden Was This was an expendable collection of second-rate Denver songs and first-rate songs done better by others. With its endless, droning minor-key riff and mumbled vocals, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” is arguably the most notorious song of the acid rock era. According to legend, the group was so stoned when they recorded the track that they could neither pronounce the title “In the Garden of Eden” or end the track, so it rambles on for a full 17 minutes, which to some listeners sounds like eternity. But that’s the essence of its appeal — it’s the epitome of heavy psychedelic excess, encapsulating the most indulgent tendencies of the era. Iron Butterfly never matched the warped excesses of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” either on their debut album of the same name or the rest of their catalog, yet they occasionally made some enjoyable fuzz guitar-driven psychedelia that works as a period piece. On The Pretender, Jackson Browne took a step back from the precipice so well defined on his first three albums, but doing so didn’t seem to make him feel any better. Employing a real producer, Jon Landau, for the first time, Browne made what sounded like a real contemporary rock record, but this made his songs less effective; the ersatz Mexican arrangement of “Linda Paloma” and the bouncy second half of “Daddy’s Tune,” with its horn charts and guitar solo, undercut the lyrics. Shine a Light is a 2008 British-American concert film directed by Martin Scorsese documenting The Rolling Stones’ 2006 Beacon Theatre performances on their A Bigger Bang Tour. The film also includes archive footage from the band’s career and marked the first utilisation by Scorsese of digital cinematography for his films, with it being used for the backstage sequences. The film takes its title from the song of the same name, featured on the band’s 1972 album Exile on Main St. A soundtrack album was released in April 2008 on the Universal label. This is also the last movie by Paramount Classics, as the company merged into its sister company Paramount Vantage after the movie was released.
