Reveal is the 12th studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M., released in 2001 on Warner Bros. Amy Winehouse – At The BBC (2012) [CD + DVD]

Amy Winehouse - At The BBC (2012) [CD + DVD]

Amy Winehouse didn’t leave much behind in the vaults, and with her studio recordings already collected on 2011’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures, the only thing left was Amy Winehouse at the BBC, a deluxe set rounding up everything the singer cut for any of the BBC’s programs. This winds up as more of a video set than a CD one, as she had more appearances on television Continue reading “Amy Winehouse – At The BBC (2012) [CD + DVD]”

R.E.M. – Around The Sun (2004) [2005, Reissue, DVD-Audio + Hi-Res]

R.E.M. - Around The Sun (2004) [2005, Reissue, DVD-Audio + Hi-Res]

Ten years after the commercial zenith of Monster and seven years after the departure of linchpin Bill Berry, R.E.M. have never seemed as directionless as they do on their 13th album, Around the Sun. To a certain extent, R.E.M. have seemed unsure ever since Monster — sporadically brilliant as it is, New Adventures in Hi-Fi was an effort to clear the decks and redefine the band in the wake of its breakthrough to superstar status. R.E.M. – New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996) [2005, Remastered, DVD-Audio + Hi-Res]

R.E.M. - New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996) [2005, Remastered, DVD-Audio + Hi-Res]

Recorded during and immediately following R.E.M.’s disaster-prone Monster tour, New Adventures in Hi-Fi feels like it was recorded on the road. Not only are all of Michael Stipe’s lyrics on the album about moving or travel, the sound is ragged and varied, pieced together from tapes recorded at shows, soundtracks, and studios, giving it a loose, careening charm Continue reading “R.E.M. – New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996) [2005, Remastered, DVD-Audio + Hi-Res]”

Breaking slightly from his pattern of a swing album following the release of ballads set, Frank Sinatra followed No One Cares with Nice ‘N’ Easy, a breezy collection of mid-tempo numbers arranged by Nelson Riddle. Not only is it the lightest set that he recorded for Capitol, it is the one with the loosest theme. Sinatra selected a collection of songs he had sang early in his career, having Riddle rearrange the tunes with warm, cheery textures. One of the more notorious albums in the history of vocal music, What a Diff’rence a Day Makes! is the lush session that bumped up Dinah Washington from the “Queen of the Blues” to a middle-of-the-road vocal wondress — and subsequently disenfranchised quite a few jazz purists.
