Santana III is an album that undeservingly stands in the shadows behind the towering legend that is the band’s second album, Abraxas. This was also the album that brought guitarist Neal Schon — who was 17 years old — into the original core lineup of Santana. Percussionist Thomas “Coke” Escovedo was brought in to replace (temporarily) José Chepitó Areas, who had suffered a brain aneurysm, yet who recovered quickly and rejoined the band. Xoo Multiplies is a bizarre album filled with singalong pop songs, a few interludes including commercial jingles and ad-men pitches, and no less than two versions of the Drells’ chestnut “Tighten Up.” There are a few solid electronic tunes (“Nice Age,” “Citizens of Science”) amid the chaos, plus instrumental versions of “Chaos Panic” and “Lotus Love” added to the CD issue. Time Out is a studio album by the American jazz group the Dave Brubeck Quartet, released in 1959 on Columbia Records. Recorded at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City, it is based upon the use of time signatures that were unusual for jazz such as 9/8, 6/4 and 5/4. The album is a subtle blend of cool and West Coast jazz. With four gold multi-disc LPs and twice as many hit singles to its credit, Chicago issued its fifth effort, the first to clock in at under an hour. What they lack in quantity, they more than make up for in the wide range of quality of material.
