ony/Legacy’s 2016 single-disc The Ultimate Collection is the first career-spanning Roy Orbison compilation since their double-disc Essential from a decade earlier. At 40 tracks, Essential would seem to have an edge over The Ultimate Collection, but the 2016 compilation has a significant advantage in that it contains the original hit versions of “Running Scared” and “In Dreams,” iconic hits present only as re-recordings on the double-disc set. Black Rose: A Rock Legend would prove to be Thin Lizzy’s last true classic album (and last produced by Tony Visconti). Guitarist Brian Robertson was replaced by Gary Moore prior to the album’s recording. Moore had already been a member of the band in the early ’70s and served as a tour fill-in for Robertson in 1977, and he fits in perfectly with Lizzy’s heavy, dual-guitar attack. The Hungarian bassist Arnie Somogyi, a long-time luminary of the British contemporary scene, recently formed an alliance with the US doctor-turned-jazzman Eddie Henderson, this cemented with an appearance ar Ronnie Scott’s and this recording. Much of the music performed here by Somogyi’s Ambulance band emerged during a musical development residency at the Snape Maltings, with Henderson added for a May 2006 tour and for this 2007 recording. In stylistic terms, large portions of Ana Caram’s first U.S. album could easily have been recorded in 1962; it’s as if time had stood perfectly still since “Desafinado” became a hit. Yet this is all for the good for this Antonio Carlos Jobim protegé, who can comfortably give material by the more contemporary writer Djavan, and even Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” the bossa nova treatment. These days, musicians often complain that major labels no longer believe in real artist development — if a debut album isn’t a big seller, chances are the artist will be dropped. But artist development is still alive and well at smaller independent labels (for the most part). That is where some A&R people are still willing to develop artists and offer two- or three-album contracts instead of merely one-album deals — which is a good thing because not every artist should be expected to be commercially and creatively triumphant the first time he/she records an album. Some people get better as they go along; even Earth, Wind & Fire recorded several modest sellers before becoming one of the top soul/funk bands of the ’70s.
