The score for any Star Trek film relies heavily upon the introduction of the classic eight-note motif that has shadowed the pop culture phenomenon since its arrival on the big screen in 1979. For Star Trek: Nemesis, the series’ tenth installment, Jerry Goldsmith delivers the theme with all of the pomp one could hope for on the rousing “Remus.” Continue reading “Jerry Goldsmith – Star Trek: Nemesis [Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (2002) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Weather Report - Mysterious Traveller (1974) [2002, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Weather Report’s fourth recording finds Wayne Shorter (on soprano and tenor) taking a lesser role as Joe Zawinul begins to really dominate the group’s sound. Most selections also include bassist Alphonso Johnson and drummer Ishmael Wilburn although the personnel shifts from track to track. “Nubian Sundance” adds several vocalists while “Blackthorn Rose” is a Shorter-Zawinul duet. Overall the music is pretty stimulating and sometimes adventurous; high-quality fusion from 1974. Continue reading “Weather Report – Mysterious Traveller (1974) [2002, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

The granddaddy of all live albums, this double-LP set captured the excitement of a Harry Belafonte concert at the height of his popularity. Sampled from two consecutive performances of identical material, Belafonte at Carnegie Hall was an anomaly at a time when only comedy albums were recorded outside of the studio environment. Spyro Gyra – Original Cinema (2002) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Spyro Gyra - Original Cinema (2002) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

A slightly sharper edge surfaces in Spyro Gyra’s second effort for the Telarc-affiliated Heads Up label. While their performance still tilts more toward easy listening than searing fusion, there’s a bit more punch than usual in the upbeat tracks. Frontman Jay Beckenstein cultivates a slightly grittier sound by concentrating largely on tenor sax, while a trio of guest percussionists adds dimension to the beat on several numbers, especially the festive “Cape Town Love.” Continue reading “Spyro Gyra – Original Cinema (2002) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Much of the album was initially composed by the team of avant-garde bassist and record producer Bill Laswell, and keyboardist and producer Michael Beinhorn, and played on tour by their group Material in 1982, as a precursor to recording the follow-up album to Material’s One Down album (on which Whitney Houston was the lead singer on a cover of the Soft Machine song “Memories”).
